I have a slot loading imac that was given to me for my grandson a couple of years ago. The disk became corrupted and I had no recovery disk made. I bought a copy of OS X then found out that I needed 9.X. I purchased a set of 9.2 install disks on ebay. The corruption is gone but now we can't remember the admin password to get past the login screen. Is there a way that I can circumvent the login screen or maybe reformat the disk so that I can start fresh? I can't change the password if I don't remember the present password.

Please help

Boot with the os x cd (restart holding down the c key). Dont do an install, look in the menus, it should have one that says "reset password"

If thats the case, boot with the os9 cd, go into the preferences folder on the hard drive, and trash anything that says Multiple Users in it. Do not trash the control panel.

thanx so much used the os 9 disk (could have sworn that I did that b4 & didn't work). Now I'm trying to get on the internet. I hear the dialing out and connect protocol using the internet setup assistant but I can't reach an ISP to register. using 56k internal modem. I get to sending location information to apple referral server then nothing. Is there a direct number to an isp? secondly, I'm using os 9.2.1 & getting ready to upgrade to os x panther. I was told that I would need updated firmware. Is this true for 9.2.1?
Again thanx for your help.

Don't use internet setup. Find a local ISP or get DSL or cable. A local ISP will give you a local number and help you get set up.

As far as the firmware update: yes. I think. Mine is an older tray loader which needed it. Not sure about yours. There should be one on the OS X cd. The update needs to be run in OS 9. Be sure to read the 'Read Me' file. It's important.
