Yeah could be from my pre Mac days, oh well live and learn, Wish I was getting track titles and artwork.

But the copies will live on external drives and probably never be used so what does it matter.
Well, actually the CD audio tract is '.cda' from the Red Book as defined below - when a CD is ripped, the multiple options possible are shown in the table; Apple typically uses .aiff and .aac - Dave

ADDENDUM: just notice several errors in the table below, i.e. FLAC & ALAC are compressed but lossless audio formats.
Red Book is the standard for audio CDs (Compact Disc Digital Audio system, or CD-DA) an audio content medium digitized at 44,100 samples per second (44.1KHz) and in a range of 65,536 possible values or 16 bits. It allowed up to 79.57 minutes of digital audio on one disc or 99 tracks.

You would if you imported through Music.
As Jake says - import into the Music App like the CD below the cover art and titles should be available or can easily be found. Dave

I thought you were trying to put the music/files/data onto your computer, per your OP?

Are you only trying to archive the data/files/music or is this as a backup of those files?

Yup, I'm confused.

I gave the necessary info to get my point across at the time, putting the Files on my Mac drive or an external drive doesn't matter. Sorry to confuse..

I started out just wanting to back up the CD's on a drive, just in case I lose one or one gets destroyed.

Since then I have been thinking about using Music but it won't recognize the CD drive. Right now I have the Audio CD Icon on the desktop but Music dose not see it, this has been an intermittent issue, even when it did see it I could not do anything with it..

Hunter - provide some more info on your CD drive, i.e. brand/model, and does the device work with your older laptop (or on someone else's computer)? Do you have the CD drive plugged directly into a port on your Mini or into a hub (if the drive is bus-powered, may not work on an unpowered hub)? Finally, assume that you have rebooted your Mini and tried again? Dave

Don't laugh and don't get angry either; but are you sure you are putting the CD correctly into your CD drive ie it isn't upside down for example?

That would explain its not being seen/recognised by the Mac.

It's an Yaeonku CB 310005, it works fine on my 2009 Mac Book Pro, it's working on my New Mini copying and pasting CD's to an external drive, However Apple Music will not recognize the drive. It did show it once but I could not do anything with it at that time..

Don't laugh, I personally had to rescue a few clients mini years ago, who is suffering from such a problem, and another who had inserted an audio cd the correct way, but there was already a four-inch optical disc inside the Drive). The inserted CD was his sliding over the top of, so it was never recognized.

It happens... 😉

FYI guys, the new CD drive arrived today and everything is now working.

Did you need to add any additional software to whatever Mac and Mac OS version you are using to get the new optical drive to work?

What software are you using and does the old optical drive now show?

Just curious. 😉

PS: I was browsing through a local computer store not too long ago and there was a fairly large gap in the shelves where blank CDs would have been but there was barely a single disc there for sale.

I guess they will end up being like floppy discs and VCR tape cassettes pretty soon.

No drivers or anything, the other cd drive was fine with my MacBook but my new M4 dint like it, this new one was plug and play.

I am disappointed in the amount of CD's Apple Music is not able to get the art work for, oh well..

Are you serious, I would swear they have always been wav files, these are commercial from the beginning.

So what are they then?
And yes the disk is in the drive , I tried it again, this time it saw the drive but would not import.
IIRC both wav and tiff files are 16 bit uncompressed audio sampled at just over 44K. Windows media players identify these files as wav. Macs identify the files as aiff. There are minor differences between the filetypes but most users won't notice the differences. My Windows box is down at the moment or I'd double check this. In the meantime anyone interested should look at this summary AIFF vs. WAV: Choosing the Best Lossless Audio Format

I just did this a few days ago and added the CD to my library. I know what yo9u want to do can be done. I'll experiment a bit this weekend.

If the files are appearing with the read Music icon you probably have Music set as your default media player.

EDIT: Finally caught up to the thread and realize the problem has been solved.

For those following this thread I have found to be a bit twitchy at times.

If a CD is appearing on the Desktop but doesn't appear in Music try dragging the files into the Music window. This often works but not always. Importing tracks can be twitchy.

I use Wikipedia, for album artwork, when Music doesn't have them.

I usually forget about using Wikipedia for album artwork. I have used Amazon on several occasions.
