Neooffice database.

I hope someone can help me.

I've been looking for a simple database, and eventually settled on Neooffice. I've now spent my pennies and purchased a copy.

I've been able to create a form. I've been able to create a table. Unfortunately, I can't get the form to 'talk' to the table. All the documentation I can find ... and online videos ... refer to "Use wizard to create form". The trouble is, there is no wizard. The only link I have is "Create Form in Design View. I've done that, but it's pretty useless unless it can "see" the data.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a little product support for this program.

Welcome to our forums.

Not too many folks are using NeoOffice especially since it's no longer free. Most folks opt for the free LibreOffice which includes a data base application along with word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Have you tried to contact the NeoOffice developers for assistance?

NeoOffice is a good program, but it is a one-man show with virtually no support offered.

You could switch to the extremely similar (based on the same codebase) and free:

LibreOffice (free)

Apache OpenOffice (free)
http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/

But I'm not sure that support will be much better.

May I recommend some alternate database programs for you to check out, which are reasonably priced, easier to use, more competent, and much more likely to offer good support?

I tried LibreOffice, but it wouldn't work. It kept telling me to install Java, which I have confirmed I already have the latest version.

I then tried OpenOffice, but that wouldn't work either ..... same problem.

I've since downloaded, and tried, a number of alternatives. None of them really do what I'm looking for.

I then discovered NeoOffice. I was aware that it was, basically, the same as LibreOffice and OpenOffice. For some reason, though, it does work. It seems to offer what I want, but there's no support to speak of. Their website just points you to OpenOffice. There are tutorials online, but they all say to use the wizard. That seems to be the difference between Neo and the others. Neo doesn't have a wizard. I did, however, manage to work out last night, how to do it without a wizard, so all is ... hopefully .. not lost. There does seem to be an annoying bug though. Everytime I add an additional field to the table, the program crashes. It seems I need to make sure I have all the fields I need at the start.

I hadn't heard of Symphytum or HanDBase. I'll take a look at those.

Once again, as I said above, if you want support for NeoOffice, you may want to download one of the near-identical programs, LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice (both are free) and get support from the folks who offer those programs. I did respond to your earlier post. I'm not sure why my response is not showing here.

To reiterate ... I tried LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Neither worked. (I kept getting error messages about my Java ... even though I had the latest version on my machine). Even though I know NeoOffice is virtually identical, that does run. I've tried all those other programs, but they don't do the basic things I need. As regards support - NeoOffice is a commercial program. It may be based on, and very similar its free cousins, but I paid for it. Having paid for it, I would expect at least a basic level of support.

I've been looking at OpenOffice/LibreOffice tutorials to give me a clue. The programs are virtually identical, but there is one very noticeable difference. All the tutorials refer to Wizards. NeoOffice doesn't appear to offer Wizards (or at least I haven't worked out how to enable them), so I'm having to learn the hard way. I'm getting there ..... slowly.

I've now actually heard back from NeoOffice. .... and I quote:-

"Apple imposes limitations on applications in the Mac App Store which make it impossible for our Mac App Store version to run many of the database wizards. Also due to Apple's limitations, the Mac App Store version of NeoOffice cannot read databases created by OpenOffice, LibreOffice, or non-Mac App Store versions of NeoOffice."

They suggested I download directly from their site. (which I'm currently doing).

I'll let you know if it solves the problem.
