Parallels and Yosemite

you have to have the latest version of parallels this is why i use virtual box

Now I'm terrified. I have Parallels which I use only for taxes (there appears to be no Intuit accounting program suitable for Mac).

In October I installed Yosemite because Apple told me to. It was a snafu, too many faults on my machine to begin to enumerate.

After flailing around for a week or so, I switched back to Mavericks. Now, I occasionally run across something that has been buggered up (which I can normally fix) but sometimes my stuff is totally missing.

I will be sorely disappointed if Parallels has been buggered 'cause it was such a challenge in the first place to get it installed and functional. Oh dear!

How did you switch back to Mavericks? I ask because if you did it right nothing should be missing or buggered up. But if you buggered up something in the switch back, things can be wrong.

Have you tested Parallels? Seems to me that if you are using it for financial data that would have been the FIRST thing to test when you went back.

Restore Mavericks after Yosemite

@MacInWin:
To switch back I went into Time Machine, back to a date just before the approximate date I had updated to Yosemite.

And no...I did not take care to backup anything, trusting Time Machine as it had always bailed me out anytime I had used it before. Anyway I wouldn't know how to do a complete backup other than try to put the documents on a USB flash / thumb drive.

I simply clicked on "Restore"; the rest seemed to take care of itself.

I followed a process as laid out in an an Apple support page or maybe forum like this one. I do not remember but the Apple page sticks in my memory better. A process for going back to Mavericks, maybe another for Windows, maybe it had to do with whether the browser in use was Safari, Firefox or other.

I think there were instructions as to the order in which to do things, like doing a couple of steps before hitting the button to eradicate Yosemite.

After the 'restore' glitches were appearing occasionally in often-used applications but were satisfactorily repaired or worked around.

Occasionally small things are popping up.

I had not checked Parallels as I do only batch inputs of financial records for our small company (sole proprietorship), usually during the winter working on tax returns, and as we are in the off-season I had no reason to fire up Parallels. It just did not occur to me.

Just now I clicked on the Parallels icon. The program does not open. A problem report form pops up from Parallels. I filled it in and submitted it. Another popup gave me a Problem ID number.

I now come back to you with my answer to your question.

Thank you for your interest.

I must say that when I installed Parallels, the process was onerous for a non-tecchie senior. Between the good instruction sheets by Parallels and their excellent short staff I was very happy - probably the best support in relation to the complexity of my problems that I ever received. More than likely I will have to call on them again and beg forgiveness.

Merry Christmas to you - I'm off to my last Santa gig for the season - all Santa's features are natural, no fake beards and such, then it's off to the barber for a haircut and beard trim. ** ** **! By the way the Canada postal code for the North Pole is... H0H 0H0

I use Parallels here, and as I recall, it is a product that on installation requires a registration code. Products that use that kind of piracy prevention are difficult, if not impossible, to restore properly. Adobe Creative Suite and just about anything from Microsoft are also in that same category. So what one needs to do is to reinstall those products from scratch, entering the registration number at the appropriate time. Now, for your virtual machine, that should be ok as it is just a file and a file can be backed up/restored just fine. What I would suggest is for you to reinstall Parallels, provide the registration code and then see if the Desktop will open. If it does, then you can add your virtual machine file to it and it should run just as before.

Great stuff, being Santa. I am old enough (and shaped the right way) to be Santa, but I have only a mustache, no beard. Mrs. Claus doesn't want me to grow one, so that's that.

Merry Christmas.

I was about to suggst to DianaLynn that if all else fails she should try reinstalling Parallels. Hopefully she has a back up of her Windows data.

I find this whole thread very scary. I have ordered and am waiting for my new iMac to arrive. I'm told it will be running Yosemite. I will then purchase the latest version of Parallels and pray that I do not run into the same kind of difficulties the OP has. It sounds like a nightmare.

Nothing to be afraid of. The OP probably has a failing hard drive, the other poster rolled back to Mavericks instead of working through the issues, messed up Parallels in the process. You are getting a machine with Yosemite all sorted out, the Parallels you buy will work with it because new Parallels is the proper version for Yosemite. As I said, I upgraded to Yosemite and updated and have had no problems with the combo. Relax and enjoy!

Thanks, that really does make me feel better.
