Multiplexer Error

I am getting a "Multiplexer Error - There was a problem during Multiplexing /Burning" message when I try to burn a movie using iDVD. I have version 6.0.2. I have tried several different movies and get the same error message. It goes through the entire encoding process and right before it startes to burn I get the message. Any suggestions?

Have you restarted your computer?

To mulitplex, iDVD needs a fairly large RAM buffer for its data. If most of your RAM is already in use, you'll get a multiplexer error.

I have tried to restart and no run other apps while burning. I am running 768 Mb of Ram with 128 GB of HD space. This has just started in the last several months. Any other ideas?

I had the very same problem a couple of months ago with my powerbook and the same idvd. It has nothing to do with the ram. I opened up my powerbook and took the superdrive out and looked at it and the siperdrive has a ribbon wire on the side of it and it was bent and cut a little so I just bought a new one that can burn DL dvds and I put it in my self and never had a error message again. I payed $120 for mine but maybe you could just repair it at the apple store. I'm guessing its your mini mac that has the problem? Because they use the same type of superdrives as powerbooks.

No, its the E-mac. I think it would be a pain to get to the drive.

I was getting multiplexing errors right at the end of the burning stage, sometimes it would just unexpectedly shut down. What i finally did to fix the problem was two things (not sure if it was both that workd or jsut one) but I went into my chapter table and I ctrl-I'd and got the info of the chapter and I removed the audio, noticing that there was an IDVD audio in there also. I also deleted the encoded stuff and unchecked the encoded option in one of the settings. I think it was the multiple audio files in a chapter... you remove them by dragging them out of the "audio well" in the chapter info. Only downside was it took double the time to burn then it would originally take. But it went all the way through and made me super stoked!

I've had issues with multiplexer errors before, and in retrospect, I should have taken better notes.

Since I was using a quicktime reference movie out of FCP, my first step troubleshooting was to try it as a self-contained one instead, which had no effect. Then, thinking it was a problem with my hardware, I moved the whole IDVD project to another computer, but I still hit the same error. This was a couple of years ago, now nearly forgotten at the edge of my own personal memory.

I just re-encountered the error yesterday and had to re-think it through. What ultimately worked (this time) was trashing my render files and rerendering. Then I re-exported, brought it back to IDVD, and the IDVD burn worked like a charm. I'm thinking something was amiss on those render files. I have no other indication that anything was wrong with them other than the Idvd error.

I'm thinking the first time I may have had to go a step further - to put it on a different sequence and rechapter it. Your actual mileage may vary, but I think it has something to do with a glitch in the source files.

i was getting very frustrated when burning in iDVD as well - as it would go thru the entire process (almost) - pop disc out with a 'done' message and have produced a blank disc. i finally discovered when I attempted to burn it on an alternate dvd burner that it must be the internal superdrive... if you have another burning option, give it a shot. (wish i had tried that a LOT sooner.)

solution to multiplex error

so, I was going crazy, searched the internet, I was repeatedly getting the dreaded multiplexing error using iDVD from an HD quicktime file...
found a suggestion on a bulletin board, (sorry I can't find it now or I'd credit you, dude-who-saved-my-life,) but his suggestion, which worked for me, was going into the iDVD advanced preferances panel, and reducing the burn speed from "maximum possible" to 4x speed.

multiplex error

I had the same issue. After about 8 hours of checking all the recommendations which did not fix anything. I believe most are a waste of time knowing what I have discovered.
My issue was a Soundtrack Pro audio track that was a reference file. I exported it to a QT fine in inserted it back into timeline. Problem resolved. Bottom line is assesst(files) are usable till they meet up with IDVD. Check all files(audio variances) first(I have mixed HD with SD without problems) and I bet you will discover the problem.
