select Finder and in the top menu, go to Finder/Preferences (cmd+,) ... in the General tab, there is a checkbox "Always open folders in new windows"

you might also want to check out different Finder views, e.g. the column view won't open a new window even if you do select that option ... there are 4 views available in the top menu under View (or press cmd+1 2 3 4)

scathe was suggesting you check these out;

Click for full size

Failing that, then Mac has been this way since 2001 & 10.0 so it is unlikely to be changed.

thanks, I was trying to stop it from opening everything in a new window. I hate having 2+ windows open just to get to something.

Can you give an example of a folder that opens in a new window? On my old Mac G4 with 10.5 and have that option to open in a new window unchecked and nothing is opening a new Window here no matter what folder I am clicking on.

Also what version of OSX is this? On 10.5.8 Leopard here.

I click on my EX HD from desktop - click on folder (Gary folder which has all my other folders like, music, videos, pictures...) when i click on 'Gary' it always brings up a new window. And when i click on vids, pics, music whatever other folder brings up a new window.

Have you tried to restart Finder / Computer? I'd try to select "Always open in new window" from Finder preferences and then deselecting it if you haven't already.
