mtmd using all cpu resource

When I execute iTunes mtmd sucks up most of cpu resources. Apparently it is backing up files to my primary hd. Why?

I assume this is happening on the Mac in your signature? According to this article tbat appears to be the Mobile Time Machine snapshot daemon.

Do you have Time Machine enabled without access to your backup drive? If so, Time Machine is probably either creating a local snapshot or deleting a local snapshot to make room on the internal drive.

I do have Time Machine running with access to external backup disk. This disk is almost full, however, TM indicates that backups are being completed. I also see that my system drive contains more "backup" space used than anything else.

Could it be because my external backup drive is so full that TM is actually backing up to the system drive?

Interesting question. To be honest I'm not sure what happens in that case. I'll see what I can dig up.

I know the local snapshots are supposed to be deleted as the internal drive fills up. Here's a bit more info about local snapshots. Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions 30. What are Local Snapshots?
