Several years ago I had an issue with MS Word launching minimized but subsequent updates appeared to resolve that.

I have now been using Office 365 Mac for a couple of years and subscribe to the Office Insider Fast Program. The last two updates have resulted in Word exhibiting the same issue again in that when launched it is minimised to about 1/8th of the size of the screen in the top left hand corner. None of the other Office apps exhibit this behaviour and everything I do to try and resolve it fails.

It's not the end of the world but if anyone knows of any tricks to get Word to open so that it fills most of the screen, not full screen, I would be forever indebted to them. I have notified MS but I'm not holding my breath!!

Some apps tend to remember their previously launched size and location and will continue to launch in that manner. You might want to try resizing/relocating and then quitting the app with CMD+q and then relaunch and see if anything changes.

I tried a number of ways of achieving this and all, including your suggestion, failed. One other suggestion was to resize and then Force Quit but that failed. I even tried using an older Normal.dotm template but that also failed.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll keep trying.

Did you delete the plist file for Word? The file is usually stored in your users Home Library folder, and not the Library folder located on the OS drive level.

Use this to find your hidden Library folder, How to Show to ~/Library Folder in MacOS Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra. Search through it for a file(s) with "microsoft & word" in the name.

I have now been using Office 365 Mac for a couple of years and subscribe to the Office Insider Fast Program.

I seem to remember that the Office Insider Fast Program offers advanced releases of the various Office programs before they're released to the general public. In other words, they may actually still be in beta before finally released. You might want to consider getting off that program.

Try what Bob suggested and remove the plist file for Word to see if that works. Using an older Normal.dotm template probably has no effect on what you're experiencing. If all that doesn't work, you might consider reinstalling Word.

Just tried it but no difference.

Yup that's my next move after, hopefully, reinstalling an older version of Word.

Thanks for all your advice guys.

Edit 10:48 - Office reinstalled to earlier version and Word has a nice big window now. Hope that's fixed in the beta before release.

Good show. I also subscribe to Office 365 Word and was thinking about getting on the fast track program but thought better of it.

Thanks for posting back.

Uh Oh!!

It wasn't fixed and my latest update has put me back where I started!!!

Microsoft accept that that there is an issue for some users and are working hard to resolve it but not, apparently, in the next update.

Sounds like it may be something about your particular setup. Hopefully you can get it figured out with Microsoft's help. I've only had to call MS customer support once back in my Windows days and remember that they only gave customers one free support call. After that, they want your credit card. I'm assuming the support you're getting from MS is free.

Just had an email from Microsoft admitting that they are getting a considerable amount of reports about the issue and are working hard to resolve it. Hmmm!

They have suggested:- As a workaround, you can open the Word application first and open document from recent list or from the File menu.

I also had a mild rebuke from Microsoft for using the word minimized. They said it is not minimized it has just forgotten how to remember what size it was when last used and instead opens up a tiny window in the top left of the screen. I stand corrected!

Wonder if it will work changing it under View > Zoom.

I think that most of the fixes have now been tried and Microsoft have more or less admittied that it is coding issue that they have to resolve in a future update.

:rofl

Maybe just refer to the problem as a MS Word Alzheimer or dementia moment instead??? :Smirk:

YeeeHaaa!

The latest Insider Update has cured the problem and MS Word now opens in a large window and it's nearly in the centre of the screen!

So that's a good fix, can you now also move and/or resize the MS Word window like a norma Mac OS application should be able to do?

In the words of the famous John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious!".

In my words, Nope, it's a one-size fits all bodge up!

You now have a window of the size that they have dictated and it is 'cheekily' positioned to the left of centre and nearer the bottom of the screen than the top. Certainly a lot better and much more usuable.

Edit: In fairness to Microsoft it should be stressed that this is an an Insider Update and the finished product may be more polished.

It sounds to me, going by your description of the position, it's matching their political slant!!!

PS: Didn't you say that their pre-updated version was working okay??? Why not reinstall It and get your proper window position back???
Insider Update version or not.

Thanks for reporting that. I was having the same problem but used a work around to circumnavigate the error. I don't subscribe to insider updates so will wait for the published fix from MS.

I can live with size and position of the latest update (Insider) and will leave it as it is.

I've turned off Insider Updates again, which I only turned on this time to access the new 'updated' version earlier.
