The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.
Therefore to clarify:
You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.
Does anyone know what I can do with an mpeg file i wish to edit in FCE? The file came from an old camcorder and I would like it in AVI really as FCE will not accept mpeg.
Another good choice to convert with, if you don't want to deal with the time-engulfing issues that surround MPEG Streamclip and Visual Hub, is to get eyeTV 3. You can open the MPEG (both elementary and separated streams are compatible), then export to DV (easiest edit format for FCE4, IMHO)...

Second, I don't think you want to convert to an AVI file as that is a Microsoft format. Since you are working on a Mac I should think it better to choose an appropriate QuickTime format like say AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).
Regardless of what you do, FCE will render the file as AIC, and then you can edit away... again, to save time and steps, in my experience, eyeTV 3 has the fastest re-encoding/rendering that I've used, to this point.
