i've heard numerous places that boiling water for tea is a sin on par with using those nasty dust filled lipton tea bags. 180F or so tops. also no squeezing the bag. ever.

well, for sure, loose is preferable, but sometimes it's impractical, such as when i'm at work. i feel pretty good about the bagged twinings though. shake the bag - not too much dust, and nice flavor.

Often in life one has to rough it, a tea egg and looseleaf are not always an option for a busy person.

Hence real tea CAN come in a bag, although the odds are against it and you have to shop carefully.

Typically, I like Tea Forte's Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong, and their Estate Darjeeling. All of which can be found here:

I'm not really any sort of tea aficionado, but I have to say I like their tea the best. Tazo isn't really all that bad either.

I feel sorry for all you guys. I don't drink coffee or tea, and all this hassle of making the stuff makes me feel stronger in my conviction to never start. :p

But it's so so good! One day you'll be tempted...

One thing i want to know - is coffee actually bad for you? I know drinking like 8 cups everyday is unhealthy but if you have one or two is that going to cause negative effects for your health. I saw a documentary about people with addictions and this guy drank at least 8 or 9 cups a day and had to get drunk in order to get to sleep! And because he slept badly he had to drink more coffee the next day to stay awake!! A viscious circle ensued! I've read coffee is a good source of antioxidants though (which can't be bad).

Also, people keep saying tea contains as much caffiene as coffee.. Personally i think that's rubbish!

Tea contains theophylline, a substance similar to caffeine (get it? theo for tea and caffe for coffee! scientist are smart!), plus it also has caffeine. Within plants, guarana is the one that has more caffeine, coffee beans have more caffeine than tea but, as i said, tea has also theophylline.

Caffeine is a drug, and as it is the case with other, it can cause addiction, but this also means it can cause tolerance and its effects can vary from person to person. Caffeine's half life is 3hrs, so if you think one dose will keep you awake all-night, well, it isn't, even if you are not used to it. I have seen people who aren't used to it and they get "high" if you make them believe they got caffeine.

Personally, i like the taste of good coffee, i also drink it as a preventive meassure for migraines, very seldom i use it as a stimulant, i value my sleep time.

I have a cheap 10 dollar coffee pot that I've had for about 3 years now. It works just as good as ever.

My parents used these. Its called a Percolator:

http://www.fantes.com/percolators.htm#instructions

Idle thoughts on drip machines as I drown my broken-machine angst in coffee:

My coffee maker just died, and while pouring hot water into the filter myself (how quaint), I wondered whether it's possible to return to the stacked-glass-pot method of brewing coffee.

I didn't have a clue as to the method's real name, but I found it here (scroll down a bit). Once upon a time these things were as common as vacuum tubes — speaking of which. Three or four or more could be seen lined up in restaurants and coffee shops, if they didn't have these.

Maybe it's time they made a comeback. Drip machines don't seem to last much longer than three or four years. If I plug mine in now, it sounds like an idling steam locomotive, like the coffee maker is about to blow up.

There's something attractive about the physics of the old system. Nature abhors a coffeeless vacuum.

Well. I just found this.

Oh and have any of you tried the Keurig K Cups? They're awesome...
http://www.keurig.com/aw/b140.asp?mscsid=JRLPNBN8TEHT8HAMF1KWR7MWEMFQ3QM2

You load the kcup like a shotgun. It brews and fills the cup, then gets rid of the empty cartridge for you. Nothing to clean!! And with the plumbing option - nothing to do ever. You just load the cartridge, place your cup, hit GO.

Whats nice is the kcups came in all different flavors. So you can brew one perfect cup of anything at any time. Kenya and Etheopia had the most 'kick'. And they had lots of teas as well, and cocoa. =)

We used to have one at work. I miss it.

giulio,

My folks used to have a percolator. They work. In fact I just realized I had coffee from a large percolator over the weekend. It tasted fine.

Oh, and yes I've tried the Kurig K Cups at a doctor office waiting room. Coffee was good1

i often with i had gotten that from her before she moved from jersey to mn. if for nothing else than a conversation piece (pretty sure those ones made lousy coffee ;))

I use a percolator to make coffee while camping over the fire. Although I don't really critique my coffee that much while camping, I did make it once in my backyard over the fire and it was not to bad.
