Minimizing app windows

I hope this is in the right forum! Please forgive me if not - I'm happy to move it.

I had to wipe my 2019 Intel Mac. It's too old for me to migrate from my new desktop iMac, so I'm doing everything manually, including settings.

I really hate my windows in apps minimizing into the application icon. I've found instructions to uncheck that option - "minimize windows into application icon". But it's already unchecked. What do I do next?

I'm sorry, I don't really know as I don't use any of those features but have you tried restarting or shutting right down and wait 3040 seconds and then boot up again and see if things change.

There might be some more information you can use here:

I'm sorry, I cannot help further. Hopefully somebody else will chime in with a constructive suggestion that will help solve your problem.

Patrick, I'm grateful you took the time to give it a shot! Thank you. I'll try those with my fingers crossed.

Minimize application windows (Using the yellow button top left) does one of two things; it either minimizes to the corresponding Icon on the Dock or to the right hand end of the dock in a seperate section next to the Trash Bin. Either way it minimises to the Dock. To me there's not much difference but there are ways to make it easier to use and alternatives to minimising which I prefer.

For example you can select and hold app icons in the Dock and drag them to more convenient places on the Dock or remove them entirely. I have all my commonly used Dock icons at the left hand end of the Dock.
In Dock Settings you can Increase the size and or magnification of Dock icons making them easier to see and find.
This is how I have set mine (note; I don't use Stage Manager);

The other thing you can try is multiple desktops via Hot Corners combined with Mission Control:

I suggest you just try Mission Control first to see what it does. I have put it on a hot corner Top Right because I seldom go there for anything else. So to activate Mission Control I just move my cursor to top right.

What you will get is this effect. Screenshot 2025-07-08 at 08.51.06.png
I currently have 4 desktops. Note the + button top right. This is to add additional desktops. You can drag and drop apps between desktops meaning you can have multiple apps open on different desktops instead of minimising them.

If I was to close all but one Desktop (each one at the top has a X button) all the open apps go to one Desktop activating Mission Control would give me this effect.

I click one and it comes to the front. This really removes the need to minimize at all. Just open multiple apps, click Mission Control to move between them. This means they can all be full size.
In this view you can add another Desktop at the top and drag an open window to it giving it it's own Desktop.

Try just putting Mission Control on your dock and play around with it. It really expands the amount of real estate you can use.

Thank you, Rod! I hope not to have to use a workaround. But it's good to have one in my back pocket.

I could have been clearer: what I'm trying to get back to is the old style of - let's take Word for example - seeing one document in the dock while I'm working on another. Or in Firefox: when I minimize a window, it shrinks into the dock. One click, it expands again.

What I'm seeing on line is people able to solve my problem by just changing that setting, and I'm trying to figure out why that's not working for me.

While I would argue my suggestion is not so much a workaround but a work flow system that eliminates the need to minimise active windows completely. But, I did misunderstand your problem; so, you don't want open windows to minimise to their icons on the dock and you have turned that action off in settings but it still happens.
You realise they would still minimise to the dock? The only difference is they would be in that little section on the right end of the dock near the Trash. It has a limit of three apps.

This may sound silly but I think I would try unticking the setting, restart the device, tick it again and restart again.
Sometimes the preferences just don't stick. What you have done should work. If that doesn't work you may need to delete the dock preferences file.

Maybe try to reset the Parameter RAM (PRAM) or Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM) on a Mac, and see if that doesn't help clear up the situation and your problem:

Pick and choose the method of the works for your particular Mac model.

An old solution to problems that still often works when other suggested things don't. It might be worth a try.

Here are the instructions for deleting the dock preferences file if all else fails. Make sure you copy and paste them exactly as they are written here.

Delete Dock Preferences Mac

To delete Dock preferences on an Intel Mac, you can use the Terminal application. Open Terminal and enter the following command to reset the Dock settings:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array
After making changes, you need to relaunch the Dock by entering the command:
killall Dock
This will apply the changes and reset the Dock preferences. If the Dock is not responding, you can also try restarting your Mac or using the System Preferences to adjust the Dock settings.

Sometimes when devices are restored or data transferred from another device the restored preferences resist change. Deleting System Preference files are a good way to start over short of Reinstalling the OS entirely. The System will simply create a new empty file in default form.
