Mini Won't Sleep

2018 Mini, OS Mojave 10.14.6

Hi - cannot find reference going back ten days to this specific issue.

Before the OS update of Security and Safari a few days ago, the Mini was programmed to go to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity, the monitor with it.

Since the update, whatever was last used remains visible on screen, remaining several hours if I happen to be away for that length of time, and I cannot seem to change that situation through SysPrefs.

Anyone else, and what advice? Thank you.

Open Activity Monitor, go to Energy tab, look for column named "Preventing Sleep," click on column header to sort. Should see mostly "No" maybe a few blank and none "Yes." If there is a Yes, that is the app that is keeping it awake.

OK, so what have you tried already? You said "SysPrefs" but didn't say which. Have you rebooted? What starts at boot in your Login items? What in System Preferences have you set? Is it in a network? If it is, is "Wake for network access" ticked? Is "Enable Nap?" Given the easy solution didn't work, we start looking at the harder ones.

Have you reset the SMC?

Answers in order of questions:
1. Desktop & Screensaver, Energy Saver (which appears the most relevant and was used before the latest updates in Mojave), Displays
2. Rebooted? Yes, no difference.
3. Energy Saver - turn display off after 20 minutes, Wake for network access
4. Network - local only
5. Enable Nap? No, because I don't need any of the services listed
6. SMC reset? No. Why might that be necessary? As explained, everything was working fine prior to the update, but that is the only thing I can think of that can have caused the change.

This is not a major problem, more a nuisance. I can put the Mac to sleep manually and turn off the monitor, something I do overnight for example, but such is not always practicable, eg. should I leave to take a phone call, or a visitor (not happening at present!!!).

Why don't you try the SMC reset anyway. It's easy enough to do with a Mini and what have you got to lose?

One of the functions of the SMC is to manage the power system. Hence, reset sometimes fixes things related to power on/off.
