i have a Sony camcorder that records audio and video on a 8 CM dvd.

I want to move them to my iMac where I can edit them.

What is a good mini DVD player that someone might recommend that can do thisl.

My G5 super disk had a indentation that allowed you to use mini disks.

Ideas, comments?

Any external DVD player with a tray should work.

Why do you think you need a cutout? Just put the disk in the drive over the spindle and close the tray.

I just wanted to emphasize and make sure the OP noted that you said they need an external TRAY load DVD recorder/player, NOT an external SLOT LOAD CD/DVD player/recorder. Any 8CM disk will jam up inside a slot load player if one was used.

Which specific Sony camcorder do you have?
Does it not have the capability to play back the recording and provide some sort of external output that you could connect to the Mac?

If the OP has an appropriate and compatible model Sony camcorder, the URL I provided earlier has a link for a method to use USB.

The appropriate models of the various camera models are listed along with the article:
How to transfer video from a DVD camcorder to a computer using a USB cable
