I have watched youtube vids and apple support sites that all tell me I can connect my mid 2012 MBP to my UHD tv by using a mini display port >HDMI adapter but it doesnt connect. What am I doing wrong? The TV itself recognises the new hdmi connection but doesn’t recognise what it is.

Please remember that we cannot see your setup, so you need to describe it to us as if we were blind.

What adapter? What other cables? What version of macOS on the MBP? Exactly which MBP do you have (there were four models in 2012)? Have you used this port before and know it works? Exactly what tv do you have? What does the Mac see in Settings or Preferences under Displays?

The mbp is mid 2012 15" i7 2.6Ghz non retina. I dont have a mac os on it as I use linux mint 22. An apple article I read says that this does not have thunderbolt just mini display port but the connection is the same. I therefore ordered thunderbolt> hdmi cable and mini display>hdmi cable hoping one would work. Both cables arrived with the same connector and pin configuration? I had the same problem when I used mini display to a standard monitor as in mini display>hdmi didnt work either. I had to use vga connection from the mini display port using an adapter. Under display setting it only shows the regular built in display. I hope you can understand my garble.

Well, I don't think I can help you as I don't know much about Linux Mint 22. Does it have drivers for HDMI through the mini display port? From your description of what you had to do before, using VGA, I suspect it does not.

Maybe somebody that knows Linux Mint 22 can chime in here. Good luck with it!

good point on the drivers i will have to check. To be honest i’m not really up to speed myself on Linux I have been using it for a while as I am collaborating on a group project which uses Linux. Up till now I have been bumbling my way through it.

Catch 22 situation here Mac guys dont know about linux and linux guys dont know much about Mac. Then there’s me stuck in the middle not apparently knowing enough about either. Maybe someone will come up with good knowledge of linux on macs but in the meantime I’ll keep researching. Thanks for the replies.
