Ah well, the moment of truth.

I've 'migrated' the old iMac to my wifes desk and connected up the new one on my desk but still haven't switched it on!

Going to have a mug of coffee and, probably, then use Migration Assistant with a TM back up from an external HDD.

I'll report back soonish!!

Well I did it and I'm having a bit of an issue with Apple ID.

My old Mac is called Peters iMac and the new one is Peters iMac (2). So far so good.

My old Mac didn't use a password at start up BUT I had to set one during the set up of the new Mac. Now when I'm trying to update my Apple ID on the new Mac as requested, amongst other things, I'm asked for the password for my old mac - which doesn't exist!

I've tried setting a password for my old Mac but it wants the old password before it will allow a new one.

I've no doubt I'll get it fixed but other than that the TM Migration appears to have gone well and quite quickly.

It sounds like you created an account on the new iMac prior to migrating. Something we advised not to do.

The migration from a previous Mac to a new one will carry everything over as before including the "keychain" which has your passwords, Apple ID, and the name of your Mac.

Hi Guys

Definitely did not create an account prior to migration it's just that I got a bit confused with the various passwords after having to set a log in password. All is now resolved and I no longer have to log in when I turn the beast on!

Thanks for your comments. I have no doubt that I'll be back!!

All apps working as they should apart from the scanner on my Canon printer. It appears to be a known issue which has not yet been resolved.

You've all been most helpful - thanks.

Edit: Fixed the scanner all OK!
