I have used MS Outlook for Mac for many years and about two years ago Microsoft introduced 'New' Outlook for Mac.

This version is, effectively, in my opinion, still a beta version and, if this is the free version, be aware that it is still NOT fully functional. For example Rules are not supported for iCloud accounts, would you believe!
If you have a lot of emails stored in various folders over long periods of time, not all of them will show in the folder. Other issues exist with Calendar and People but luckily you can revert to what they now call the Legacy version of Outlook when used as part of a 365 account. Whether that will be available with the free version I don't know.

After very many years, I have decided not to renew my 365 account and dump all Microsoft apps, except Onedrive. I have been using Apple Pages and Numbers for a few weeks now and I'm just about getting the hang of them! Reverting to Apple Mail was a breath of fresh air, simple and quick. Onedrive remains, in my opinion, as one of the best free cloud accounts.

I also have an O365 account, which I used on my Windows PC, and on moving to the Mac installed Outlook to convert my PST files to OLM, little did I know that OLM was Outlook specific (but that is a different story). On installing Outlook it was the New version that appeared, and both Import and Export were greyed out, later to find out only available on the legacy version. On reverting to the Legacy version I was a little surprised to find the account details entered did not "come across" and the accounts added again. I also found that all though the Legacy Mac Outlook looks similar to windows Outlook, there are some subtle differences.
My biggest disappointment was the lack of integration with iCloud Contacts and Calendar, Windows has "iCloud for Windows" with integrate certain parts of your iCloud account which means both my contacts and calendar remained synced across my devices. However calendar was not "there" and after some investigation I found that contacts would need to be copied into Outlook, meaning a duplicate set and no syncing. If these two issues were sorted I may consider using Outlook, especially as it's free, otherwise I will stick with Apple Mail.

For all of those forced to use Outlook in their workplaces this is good news I'm sure. "Mac users who work for these businesses are surely well familiar with Outlook, whether or not it’s a better email app than Apple Mail, Microsoft is making it free for users to put Outlook on their personal Macs." Formerly part of MS Office 365 at around US$69.00/year it is now a free app available on the Apple App Store. "It supports Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo! or IMAP accounts. As noted, that includes both email and calendars". See;

Microsoft makes Outlook for Mac free for everyone!

Outlook is a high-end e-mail and calendar program.

I apologize, I should have made it clear for those who don't know, Outlook is an integrated e-mail, calendaring, and contacts application suitable for business use. In addition, I'm told that there are a ton of plug-ins for Outlook to vastly extend its capabilities.

I haven't tried the latest version of Outlook for the Mac myself (it requires macOS 11 or greater and I don't currently have any Macs running a version of the OS that high), but from a discussion elsewhere it seems that the current version of Outlook adds a lot of pretty important features that were lacking in the immediately preceding version. So the latest version appears to be ready for prime time. Of course, the product is free, so you can try it out yourself with no risk. If you do, please post any feedback you have.
