That would be the Auto Update daemon that runs after any of the Office apps have been launched to see if there are updates. It is not malware, just ridiculously annoying since it will find like 5 gazillion gigs of updates EVERY f'ing time it launches. But best to keep the office suite up to date.

I'm actually amazed that there are that many and that huge updates each time I launch. It's just crazy. Thankfully, the updates can be deferred, which is what I do, since I barely use the apps and when I do, I just want to get in and out and not have to deal with the updates.

I use Word daily, have observed that the updates come once a week, usually involve hundreds of MB download per app. I think MS just reinstalls everything rather than selectively updating what they have changed.

I'm a very infrequent user of Word and Excel and I've seen 1.3GB+ size updates.

That could be cumulative, or represent all the components of Office. What I am seeing is about 1.2GB/week, with about 400GB each to Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. Seems to come on Fridays (Happened this morning, for example). I'm in Office365, so I get all the updates. It's bad enough on the MBP, but I have Office installed on my iPhone and iPad, and they each get the same 1.2GB downloads. I tried setting up the cache of updates for iOS, but it still seems to download them each time. Fortunately, my ISP is unlimited, so I set it not to use cellular and only update at home on my WiFi.

Yikes, that's HUGE for some updates!!!
I'm also a very infrequent MS Word user and at least my old 2008 version still works for me and I don't think I've been bothered with any Office '08 updates for some time now. Nice!! ;D

I have MS Office 365 and use Word, Outlook & Excel regularly.

I was surprised to see all the complaints of continual updates as I get one, maybe two, updates a month. Admittedly they are big. I do get a lot of updates, however, for Onedrive.
