Hi. I just bought a 13 MBA and I love it. My first question is, I want to store movies on a portablee external hard drive and watch them in flight.

Is there a specific file type that is needed for a mac?

2011 Mac mini and 2010 13" MacBook Pro, iPhone 4 and iPad
Without specific plugins installed or downloading another media player ( I would suggest either installing Perian for Quicktime or download VLC for mac ) then yes Quicktime only runs certain formats. Here's a list of formats Media formats supported by QuickTime Player

When you say file type are you talking about the hard drive or the format of the movies?

if the HDD format fat32 thats what i do so i can use it in windows,mac,ps3,xbox etc.

if your talking about the movies i agree with the previous post above mine.
