It can depend on what OS X version you're using.

If in doubt and want it "cleaned up", just do a restart or if you're really fussy, a shutdown, wait 20-30 seconds, then boot up.

But generally, OS X versions, especially from SL 10.6.8 onwards will look after what memory you have installed properly on its own.
