mbp crashing when hot, other weird stuff

I have an older 15 in macbook pro that has been giving me quite a few problems.

Please forgive the mini-novel, but I thought I'd give as much info up front. I am also a mac newb, as you may be able to tell from the following:

I upgraded from Tiger to SL about 5 or 6 weeks ago. At the time I did not have an external HD to back up to so I installed SL without a clean wipe of the internal drive (which I understand is the recommended way to go). I also had to install more ram in order to support SL (not apple specific ram, but purchased from an apple-mainly store and installed by an apple certified tech).

Shortly after installing SL, the machine began randomly freezing, crashing, & running hot. I also began to get random horizontal lines going across the screen. They come and go and appear in different places. About 2 weeks ago, it totally stopped booting. I had to use the DVD to get it to book. Once booted, I used the disk utility to scan the HD, and there were problems that the utility couldn't fix. I took it to an apple store and they ran all sorts of utilities. They were slammed and I did not get a chance to ask specifically what they did.. all I know is that it took them several hours to run the tests. What I do know is that they did not do anything to the hardware per se. They eventually got it running fine ... for about a week.

It began crashing again, and I began noticing that it would be more likely to crash the hotter it got. In fact, when it was doing this, I could put it in my cold garage to cool down and it would run fine ... until it heated up again.

So I backed up to an external HD using Time Machine, erased my internal HD, and re-installed SL. That did not fix the overheating issue unfortunately. I also unplugged the mag safe, removed the battery, and pressed the on/off button, as I read that this sometimes re-sets how a mbp heats, cools, and so on. If there are any suggestions on where to go from here, I'd appreciate them.

After installing 10.6, did you install all the updates to Snow Leopard ?
If not, I would install the 10.6.2 combo update first, it might solve a couple of issues.

Cheers ... McBie

will do updates, in the meantime

After the last crash, I got the following rationale for the malfunction. That is, once I retrieved my mbp from my cold garage (and it started up perfectly). As a newb, I have no idea what means. I will do the updates right after this. Thanks for the tip!
