Mail Won't Quit

If I use the mail application during a session, my Mac Pro won't shut down, because "The application Mail cancelled shutdown".

I have to Force quit Mail, and then shutdown proceeds normally.

What gives?

You're not alone. Same here.

Don't think I've even tried to shut down or restart in over a year without going ahead and quitting Mail first.

You're not alone. After doing a quick search online, quite a few people seem to have this problem when trying to shutdown their Mac. Just ensure that Mail is completely closed before attempting to shut down. If you have problems closing it, push Option-Command-Esc to open a Force Quit window and force quit Mail from there.

Yeah, I know how to force quit and everythng - it's just a PIA, and has been going on for a couple of years now through Tiger and Leopard. Just seems like something Mac would've fixed by now. I still love my Mac, and you couldn't pay me to go back to a PC. Especially when I can run Windows on my Mac as needed! Thanks!

Go to mail Preferences -> General -> Check for new mail
Change your setting to 5 mts or higher. Or choose "manually"
When you try to quit, it could be active looking for new mail.

Try Deleting your Anti-Virus

Thanks for the tips but none of those worked for me. In the end I deleted Avast as I had a suspicion it was scanning mail which was preventing it from shutting down properly and it worked first go

Thanks for posting this. We generally warn our members about using AV software and how some versions can interfere with normal operation. Avast has long been a "problem" both in Windows and the OS X version.

I had this problem when I first synced the Mail program with my IMAP server. I opened the activity window and there was a lot of stuff going on, including "caching attachments" which ended up taking days. (I had a huge Inbox to sync with) At times the Mail program was taking a lot of CPU time. Once it got caught up with the caching business, it was quitting with no delay.

Try opening the Activity window and see what's going on. It could be it's refusing to quit because it's in the middle of doing something.

I had the "mail cancelled shutdown" message. I have 5 email accounts run by Mac mail. I checked the Actions box and found it was busy trying to delete trash from an old & rarely used account. I took this account offline and repeated shutdown process. Works fine!

I started having too many problems with the Mail program and now use ThunderBird. Apple doesn't seem to support Mail anymore. You may want to look ahead and plan for Mail becoming an "orphan" - unsupported, lonely and forgotten.

How is Mail unsupported? It's fully supported by Apple as one of the major client applications of OS X.

Because when I was having problems and was trying to get answers from the Apple.com/mac/ forum, I didn't even get a single reply. Somebody on this forum told me I should just go to ThunderBird and be done with it since several other people reported hearing crickets after requesting tech support for the Mail program. I did that and now everything is just fine on this end.

The Apple discussion forums are hosted by Apple but depend on community involvement (much like this one). In other words, it's not Apple techs on the other side.

Thanks it worked for me I changed setting to 30mins.
