This is all strange to me. I have 6 email accounts, Apple, Gmail, my ISP, old Netcom account, my old ISP account and one other. I have 4 Macs with El Capitan and never had one issue with Mail both receiving or sending to and from any of my accounts. Something strange is going on.

I trust Norton Security as much as I do windows 3.1! I have Seen norton cause many network issues on PC's and always removed it and the issue was gone.

It's strange to me also Dennis. However, in my internet research to find a solution I have read many accounts like mine with El Capitan and also many of these reports said that they took the problem to Apple Genius Bar with no solutions from the Techs.

I had several huge issues when I updated to El Capitan and now I look at updates with extreme caution. I make sure I've backed up everything before hand and pray that I don't find any more nasty bugs. I used to be a PC person and still have my old PC Computer and Apple updates are getting to be more difficult than any PC updates I've had. Sad.

Dennis, what do you use for Security?

Macs have no known Virus's. Malware is very rare. A security suite is not needed at all with OSX. I run Malwarebytes for OSX every once in a while. Safe browsing practices are all that is really needed for OSX.

I am a Beta tester for Apple and have been testing every single update of El Capitan since the very first beta. That is why I find this strange as I have not had any issues on my test iMac with mail.

First step I'd take is get rid of the Norton package.

Im not entirely convinced that this is an OS problem. I do think disposing of any third party applications that may effect your security settings would be a good idea it just complicates the issue and as there is absolutely no need for Norton Security I would get rid of it.
It is possible that the Apple Mail app itself is the problem (wouldn't be the first time). I suggest you give another email application a try and see if you have the same problems. This will rule out several possibilities and the best suggestion I can think of that will run on your OS is Mozilla Thunderbird, you can download from here; https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird
Just set up one account and see how it goes.
As I see it you have three things working against you and obviously one of them has changed or changed something.
1. You are running old an outmoded, unsupported operating System.
2. You have a gMail account running on Apple Mail, there have been long standing issues with mail and gMail.
3. You have a third part Security app running with unknown actions.
Running a different email client, if it works will eliminate two of those factors.

When i upgraded to El Capitan last week, everytime i booted up my Macbook, i'd get an error message saying it couldn't log into Gmail.
i'd also get a Gmail saying a sign in attempt had been prevented.
I only have my Gmail account linked to back up my phone contacts.
After a couple of reboots (as i was testing El Capitan) i was asked to enter my Gmail password. its worked fine ever since ?

Finally got my Gmail account working. I can't say how, as I didn't take notes as I played around with it.

Seriously considering leaving my MBP on Mavericks, but if I do move it to El Capitan I'll report back if I have the same problem, and take notes if I do have the problem.

Yodrak

PS - I added the Google address that sends the "a sign in attempt has been prevented" e-mails to my blocked senders list. Very annoying, I know perfectly well already that you won't let me sign in.

Actually, after I upgraded from Mavericks to El Cap on my iMac, in the last few days of Dec, 2015, Mail would not longer connect with either my Gmail account or my primary e-mail account that is through a small, local ISP. The ISP account is set up as POP3. After several days of frustration I tried to set up a new account in Mail designating it a IMAC, not POP3. At first I got a message saying that the ISP account already exists, but the next thing I new I had 2 ISP accounts in Mail, 1 POP3 and 1 IMAP, and they both connect and download my e-mails. I have not yet discussed this with the ISP, but they are PC guys and admit to not knowing things Mac so I doubt I'll learn much from them.

Getting back to the Gmail, every time I try to make that account connect I get the " A sign-in attempt was blocked ... doesn't meet modern security standards" e-mail. On my other Mac, a MBP that is still running under Mavericks. Most frustrating, the e-mail only provides links to Google web pages that don't provide any enlightenment and don't provide any contact info to communicate with Google about what the real problem might be - only circuitous links that take you from one web page to another and back again.

Good thing I only have the Gmail account to use as an e-mail address for an alternate Facebook account, not for actually doing any e-mail. The one benefit of not being able to connect is that I no longer have to receive and delete the annoying " a lot has happened " e-mails from Facebook.

Cheers!

Just as an afterthought you could introduce Two Step Verification to that account. That may satisfy Google's security requirements and considering your OS, yours as well as it adds a whole new layer of protection. This will involve using Google's Authenticator application on a mobile device but once setup it has a number of uses and advantages. Have a look at it on your Google account details page under security.

I am having the exact problem with my gmail. it told me that I had the wrong outgoing mail preference and when I check they were all deleted. I added them again and I go the message from google that an attempt to access my account had been blocked. I am running the most current OS. Not sure whether it is an OS issue, mail issue or gmail. This is not the first time I have had this problem and its getting old!

I ended up deleting all my google accounts from mail and then adding them again. so far so good. Hope this will be a permanent fix.

This is one of the reasons I stopped using Mail but my wife persists and has solved most of her gmail issues by initiating two step verification for her accounts via Google Authenticator.

What mail app are you using instead of Mail? I didn't want to have to use the two step and have to add something every time I log in.
