In the past, I have not had a problem updating my gmail and yahoo accounts using mail. I was able to download, work offline, return to online, send...no problem. Same goes for the yahoo account. Gmail is giving me a rejected box. (I attempted to attach a screenshot). Basically is reads:The SMTP server “smtp.gmail.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]” Enter your password again or cancel.

I am certain I am typing in the same password as the one for my gmail account. Is there a way to reset?

thanks,
dj

Chances are your gmail password has become corrupt in Mail. Just log on to your gmail account from the gmail web page and reset your password to a new one. Then go back to Mail and change it there in preferences, account settings. I have had to do that very same thing several times with my gmail account.

Thanks. Tried above instructions without luck. I should have mentioned the little exclamation point inside the triangle next to the number of emails currently in the gmail account on mail. See attachment MailScreenSnapz001.jpg

If the attachment doesn't show, the pop up reads: UNABLE TO CONNECT There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Gmail” or try again. The server returned the error: Please log in via your web browser: https://support.google.com/mail/accounts/answer/78754 (Failure)

Now what?

thanks again...

Here's another piece: When I attempt to log in, I get an email sent to me indicating 'someone just tried to log in from an non-secure app'
MailScreenSnapz002.jpg

That message is sent to both my Yahoo and Gmail accounts. What's not secure? I'm only attempting from my computer. I have no problem retrieving mail on my iPhone or iPad.

thoughts?

This would suggest that you are running a very old version of the OS, one that no longer receives security updates.

Let me guess:10.6.8?

Interesting Chas as my older Minis have 10.6.8 and I check Gmail all the time unless this just stated in the last 24 hours.

I just fired up one of the Minis with 10.6.8. Sent a few messages from my other machine with large pic attachments even. No errors.

Are you using POP or IMAP to connect to google mail?

It amuses me no end that everyone on 10.6.8 has finally decided (or been pushed) to upgrade finally, and that every single one of them has reported here. :)

I'll try for two gold guesses in a row and think perhaps pothypine is using POP. Changing to IMAP will, as demonstrated above, keep you from upgrading ... for a little while, but this is a warning shot that presages a lot of similar issues. You're running an insecure OS version, so expect to see this sort of thing pop up more and more often as time goes on.

Account type reads: Gmail IMAP. Now what do you suggest? Are there any free upgrades that can run well with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory?

I'm getting the same message from Google, "... an account that doesn't meet modern security standards" after upgrading my iMac from Mavericks to El Capitan.

I'm thinking the best solution is to delete my Google account.

Well, this is very interesting , because my 27' iMac (mid 2015) running OS X 10.10.5, started to do this not just with gmail but also an account housed with 123-reg and two different Exchange based work accounts in the last days of Dec 2015, and so far I have been unable to resolve the issue for ANY of the accounts. However, my iPad mini (quite an old one running iOS 8) has not had the issue at all.

I'm thinking that this is a mail issue, or possible an OS X issue, that has arrived with some of the latest updates.

Hmmm. Wondering if this is some kind of malware. Are you absolutely certain the message is actually coming from Google?

Actually, after I upgraded from Mavericks to El Cap on my iMac, in the last few days of Dec, 2015, Mail would not longer connect with either my Gmail account or my primary e-mail account that is through a small, local ISP. The ISP account is set up as POP3. After several days of frustration I tried to set up a new account in Mail designating it a IMAC, not POP3. At first I got a message saying that the ISP account already exists, but the next thing I new I had 2 ISP accounts in Mail, 1 POP3 and 1 IMAP, and they both connect and download my e-mails. I have not yet discussed this with the ISP, but they are PC guys and admit to not knowing things Mac so I doubt I'll learn much from them.

Getting back to the Gmail, every time I try to make that account connect I get the " A sign-in attempt was blocked ... doesn't meet modern security standards" e-mail. On my other Mac, a MBP that is still running under Mavericks. Most frustrating, the e-mail only provides links to Google web pages that don't provide any enlightenment and don't provide any contact info to communicate with Google about what the real problem might be - only circuitous links that take you from one web page to another and back again.

Good thing I only have the Gmail account to use as an e-mail address for an alternate Facebook account, not for actually doing any e-mail. The one benefit of not being able to connect is that I no longer have to receive and delete the annoying " a lot has happened " e-mails from Facebook.

Cheers!

Apple Gmail keeps asking for your password and you can log in to your gmail web account without a problem?
If so, your Google security setting is the problem.
Google regards Apple mail app as 'less secure'.
Here is the link you need to read to make your setting 'less secure' and thus use Apple mail.

Hope this helps

Perhaps you should look at your add-ons/extensions. Look for "Google Contacts" Add-on, try disabling it and you might get a nice surprise.

Where do we find these "add-ons/extensions"?

In Mail>Accounts I do not have Contacts checked for my Google account.

Thanks, Yodrak

I had a similar problem. There is a setting in gmail which lets you select the less secure old format.

I updated to El Capitan in December and have the most current update.

From the time that I updated my MacBook Pro at first I could not send on any of my accounts including iCloud. I have one iCloud email, one Gmail and 3 addys with HostGator. I checked all passwords, reset and updated all passwords, checked spelling, rebooted my computer. I even had to have my MacBook reset by the Apple Genius bar back to Yosemite for another problem and re-install El Capitan from scratch. This solved my other problem but not the email.

At this time the iCloud address works for receiving and sending but none of the others work for sending. Each attempt gives me the message that the Outgoing Server is not found. All are set for IMAP. On my iPad 2 and my iPhone 6 Plus all email accounts work including Gmail. It has to be a glitch with El Capitan. Note: I run Norton Internet Security on my MacBook.
