I'm using High Sierra 10.13.6 on a Late 2012 Mac mini

After years of uneventful use Mail suddenly can't connect to my email account and puts up a dialog requesting a PW. When I enter the correct PW, Mail responds "unable to verify account name or password." PW is correct, and I can log in to Comcast's website and access my account. How fix? Very frustrating.

The Mail app usually requires the PW to be applied at 3 different places:

Mail > Settings > Accounts > Server Settings.

PW for - "Incoming Mail Server"; "Outgoing Mail Server"; and under "Edit SMTP Server List"

Worth checking that you have added your PW to all of these.

Thanks Ian.

When I try to add the PW, the one I have used for a long time, in Internet Accounts, I get the same message: Unable to verify account name and PW. Suddenly. it quit working.

Google uses 2 factor authorization, so I usually get asked to confirm it is me trying to access the account. You might have to allow google access in Settings > Privacy & Security.

You might check with your email provider to see if they have changed anything recently. You get that message if Mail cannot connect to the server.

I still don't know what went haywire. I logged into Comcast's glacially slow website and created new PWs and entered those into settings and Mail started working again. Should have been simple, but was a slog.

I used to have a Comcast email, and the service was universally dreadful. I also had occasions, like you, where the servers simply would not allow me to log in with perfectly valid passwords, so I had to reset them. I don't have them anymore.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought google was mentioned. Must have been thinking of a different thread.
