Macs next processors

It is rumoured that a new processor is coming in the summer. Seeing how the nahelem processor has been in the macs since last year, what more could the new processors offer compared to whats in them already?

The i9 is likely to replace the Xeon at the very least. The i9s are 6 core CPUs, so you can see a 12 core MacPro coming in the near future.

I'm hoping for the PA Semi 6T and POWER7, MUCH more powerful than intel offerings, or an addition of AMD to the line

no doubt, the release will cost big buck and then taper off as usual, but the xeon 5500 is the front line technology right now for us simple folk, are the "i" chips that much more of a big deal. From what Ive read whats out there right now is more then most people even need, even the techies in the intel forums are more than happy with the nahelem technology....

Consider that the new iMacs have the i7, a much newer technology than the Xeons. If you're just checking e-mail, surfing the web and hopping on AIM with your significant other, the G4 was more than enough. Seriously though, if you are dabbling in photography or working with video (shooting, converting etc) more is always better. If you're a pro, more = $$$$. Technology moves on and there will always be a demand for the latest and greatest.

Besides, there's no such thing as having "too much" power, but there certainly is such a thing as having "too little" power. You never miss what you don't have until you need it. My G5 screamed 5 years ago when I got it, but compared to the Xeons, it's fairly slow when converting video (40-50 FPS wide open on the G5 compared to 90-110+ FPS for the Xeon). I can't wait to see how much the i9s bump that up even more.
