well i know how to turn my old g4 on and off but this MacPro doesnt have the on / off button on the keyboard. figure best to go to under the apple and Shut Down. but then i can only see to turn it on by the power button on the front of the tower. is this the proper way to do it, i dont need to mess any more up than im going to.

You have it all correct!:)

It's been a long long time since we were able to turn on a Mac from the keyboard (a real shame). This was always one additional "fun" little thing that differentiated Mac's from Windows computers (at the time).

You can sleep, restart, and shutdown your Mac from the keyboard...but then again it's just about as easy to just use your mouse (or trackpad for laptops).

- Sleep: command+option+eject
- Restart: command+control+eject
- Shut Down: command+option+control+eject

HTH,:)
