I just noticed that mail app is no longer showing an attachment icon in the email message list as I am sure it used to prior to the most recent Mac OS 15 0.4 update.

Apple's directions to make sure it is showing doesn't even show as an option so either I am blind or they have removed it.

Can anyone confirm which of those two it might be?

Both instructions from Apple and from the web basically say the same thing but I am assuming that they may not be applicable to the most recent Macos 15.4 release:

To display attachment icons in the message list in macOS 15 Sequoia's Mail app, you need to enable the "Show attachments in message list" option. This setting is not directly visible in the main Mail interface, but it can be accessed through the "View" menu.
Here's how to enable it:
Open Mail: Launch the Mail application on your Mac.
Access the View Menu: Click on "View" in the menu bar.
Enable "Show Attachments": In the View menu, look for an option that says "Show Attachments" or "Show Attachments in Message List". Make sure it's checked or enabled.
Verify the Change: After enabling the option, the attachment icons should now be displayed in the message list in the Mail app, indicating the presence of attachments in each email.

There is no such "Show Attachments" option showing or available anywhere in my macOS 15.4 version of Mail.app.

I would appreciate it if anybody could tell me how an attachment icon could be enabled or to the Mail list of messages containing attachments.

Thanks Jim B, I don't think I would have ever have discovered that, and why couldn't Apple's Mail Help explain such a solution?

I had been looking through the various settings and view options as well as Mail Help topics.
Your solution is certainly appreciated and I also found I could add a flagged icon column which no amount of searching I did provided an answer to get it back and working in list View, so I am doubly thankful for your solution. 😊

Maybe one day I'll finally get everything working on my Mac at least close to the way things were working and showing up when using my old 2011 iMac running El Capitan.

Well spotted Jimmysb, what confused me was that you have to go to Columns View to fix this.

Paperclip Icon Location in macOS Sequoia Mail

"To show the paperclip icon for attachments in macOS Sequoia Mail, you can add the attachment column to your inbox. Here’s how:
  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Right-click on any column header (such as "Size" or "Sender").
  3. Select "Attachments" from the dropdown menu to add the attachment column.
This column will display a paperclip icon next to emails that have attachments. However, some users have
reported that this feature does not work for POP email accounts, only for IMAP accounts.234
If you are using a POP account and do not see the paperclip icon, you might need to forward your emails to an IMAP account to view the attachment icons."

Of course I don't have column headers because I don't use Column View.

Now like before the little paperclip icon appears as below;

With that little bit of information, maybe it is a good thing. I have been unable to get two of my old POP accounts working as POP accounts in Mac OS X 15 Sequoia's Mail.app regardless of the recommended settings to use. Unfortunately, rogers technical support staff or basically useless and can only suggest to use the settings that are posted on the web. But they don't seem to understand when I tell them none of the postage settings have worked to access my email accounts. As I shed, pretty well useless ISP technical support. :-(
