Not sure if anyone out there is using this application, but I am.

It is still a great personal finance application.

Anyway, I recovered a some files for a year I was missing. All files were successfully recovered in the folder.

However, when I try to open them in the app, the files will not load, and it freezes the app.

I have to do a force quit.

The files size and names all look good.

Any ideas on how to get these files to open in the application.

I know it is a long shot, but I thought I would ask!

I think they need to be re-indexed.

Thanks

Man, talk about a dinosaur! Try going to the MacMoney Wiki page and see if you can maybe get some information there about opening those files.

However, I suspect when you recovered those files, they may not be completely intact or have some corruption which sometimes happens during file recovery. You can try using TextEdit to view them but I suspect you're not going to get much.

Two rowboats crossing in the dark!

I am working on some personal finance issues from the mid-1990s and it seems that I used MacMoney back in those days before I switched to Quicken in about 1995.

I am purchasing a Mac SE/30 off of eBay and I will go pick it up about 95 miles away just after the 1st of the year (we are waiting for some RAM SIMMs that I purchased from OWC to be delivered so they can be installed before pickup).

I don't think it will run in my SheepShaver emulator, as that runs OS 9, which I believe is much later than MacMoney.

Do you have any other MacMoney data files that you can open?

What Mac are you working on? What does "reindexed" mean to you?

Looking at your photos my files seem different than your files:

Welcome to our forums.

Another dinosaur. :)

It would appear that your version of MacMoney is different from that of the original poster.

Kind of reminds me of Microsoft Money when I tried to read old files from the 90s. I finally gave up and now use a Mac program to handle my finances. (which aren't much)

I also do online banking as my bank archives my finance inputs for 7 years. That's handy to have when looking for old transactions.

Good luck.

Looking at his files sizes, I do not think he got a full recovery!

I switched to Quicken in 1995 and have been using it ever since: I am fixed on Quicken 2007 for Intel Macs as the later versions skimped on features.

I charge everything on my credit cards, pay them off 100% every month and export from their website and suck all the transactions right into Quicken: already has Date, Payee and Amount. I just add my category and at the start of the new year, after reconciling, I print a report for my accountant to do my tax returns.

I am hooked!

Thank you for your welcome; and yes, my specialty tends to be dinosaur Mac stuff!!

BTW: The secret is each year to do a complete transaction export into a format that MS Excel can read and you can always go back and sort your transactions as needed.

My current project has to do with our expenses after the 1994 Northridge earthquake

I was able to fix the year that I had bad index files. I spoke to Mr. Mike Farmer the developer of MacMoney, and he recommended I created a new year and then sub'ed the transaction file into the new folder. After fooling around with it for a while I was able to get the files to open. I still use this excellent application, and have not through all these years, all these Mac OS's found a app that is as useful and easy to use as MacMoney. My only wish is that someone would resurrect this app for OS X. There is a real void for Mac in personal finance applications, most are too complicated.

That's saying a lot when the developer of an app that old was still willing to help you. :)

The problem with using an old favorite app is that we get hooked to it and then become resistant to change of any kind.

I was the same way with my favorite Windows finance program that I mentioned above. I finally "bit the bullet" and switched to another program when I gave up on Windows and changed to using a Mac.

I have not been able to find any Mac Financial app as easy to use without being overly complicated as MacMoney

Any suggestions?

Thanks

My finances have changed over the years and now much less complex. I currently use "Checkbook" which you can find in the Mac App Store.

There are two versions: One very simple for managing your checkbook and bank statements, etc. The Pro version does much more. You can check them out in the Mac App Store.
