MacBook Pro mid-2012 Battery Cycle

:I hey, i am trying to figure out the maximum battery cycle for my Mid-2012 macbook pro's battery. please tell me, it is 375 and if the magsafe goes green it will be 99% so it won't go to 100% anymore. EMERGENCY

How is this even remotely an emergency?

There's no way to tell you how long your mid-2012 battery should last without a comprehensive study of how you use it. And even then that wouldn't take into account potential factors like defects.

For comparison purposes, here's the report from my mid-2012 MBP, courtesy CoconutBattery (which is free). Please note that this is not the original battery; it was replaced with a third-party battery before I bought it used, so it's fairly new:



Typically, a MacBook Pro battery will last many more cycles than what you've got listed for yours -- it should handily outlive the typical four-year replacement cycle for such machines, but under normal use will gently fade in capacity over that time. This is perfectly normal.

The latest MBP's have improved batteries (that are also sealed and not replaceable) that normally keep nearly-full capacity for quite a few years before gently fading. Hope that helps.

What member chas_m means here is that they are not user replaceable as they are glued to the chassis. However, Apple will replace those batteries for a $199.00 one time charge and a 120 day warranty for the new battery.

An interesting observation on my nearly 2 y/o MBPro - I'm using the 'Battery Health' app and my battery had lost about 4% of its health in the first 6 months (first listing in the quote below) - I started to leave it plugged in most of the time and the cycles are now @ only 210 (the battery was made almost 2 years ago).

Early in Feb, the battery health was reported @ nearly 97% - after reading this thread, I did another check and it was down to 86%! Could not imagine 'why' it lost 10% health in about 2 weeks or so - a reboot and a near complete recharge overnight did no good, so I tried a SMC reset - just did a recheck of the app and now nearly at 94% (bottom listing in the quote below), so I can live w/ that number - might help others. Dec 12/2013 - 191 cycles - same as above

Aug 29/2014 - 202 cycles -
Full charge capacity - 6415 mAh

Nov 25/2014 - 204 cycles
Full charge - 6427/6600 (97%)

Feb 7/2015 - 208 cycles
Full charge - 6394/6600 (96.8%)

Feb 28/2015 - 210 cycles
Full charge - 6166/6600 (93.4%)

Also of note, Don't know if this has changed, but all the Apple notebooks I've owned, If the power cable becomes unplugged when the battery is at 97% or higher (pretty sure that's the number) and you plug it back in, it will not begin charging the battery again until it reaches below 97%. (Could be 96, it's been so long since I even paid attention to it...)

I always thought the percentage was 95% (seems to be on my MacBook Pro)…but even in this Apple document it's not super specific.

"Occasionally, the battery may not show a full charge (100%) in OS X, even after the power adapter has been connected for an extended period of time. The battery may appear to stop charging between 93 percent and 99 percent. This behavior is normal and will help to prolong the overall life of the battery."

Thanks Guys for the additional comments and the link (believe I've been there before a number of times - a lot of good information for those interested).

Assumed that the SMC reset was needed on my laptop to recalibrate the battery monitoring - seems to have worked - I'm back up to 94% battery health - Dave
