Cause: MacBook Pro getting bashed in luggage

Symptoms: 3 beeps on start-up, black screen etc

Description of actions taken:

Step 1:

Opened up laptop and reseated RAM. No change.

Step 2:

Removed RAM 1 from upper slot, attempted restart on single RAM card only. No change.

Step 3:

Removed RAM 2 from lower slot. Reseated RAM 1 in upper slot. No change.

Step 4:

Removed RAM 1 from upper slot and reseated it in lower slot. MacBook Pro restarts after some delay (for caching??)

Called a halt there as now have working laptop albeit on 50% RAM capacity.

What next steps do people recommend??

Hi and Welcome!

Is the RAM the original from Apple or did you do an upgrade? It is possible the RAM chip you took out is bad and needs to be replaced. The beep code indicates a failure to pass the data integrity check - which you obviously know.

If it were me, I would go to Crucial and OWC, compare costs of new memory. Replace the chip that is not working. Even better you might consider replacing both so they will match. You don't say how much RAM it had but you can put 16GB in that model so while you are shopping you might want to check out the cost.

Crucial.com - DRAM, solid state drive (SSD) memory upgrades for Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS

You might also want to figure out a way to avoid bashing your macbook pro too.

sounds like something is missing on the main board or something else broke off or got damaged.

this is why when you travel you get insurance

How did you arrive at this conclusion given that the machine is working with one of the ram chips removed?

I think what John is saying is that one of the module slots on the logic board may have been damaged when the MBP was smashed in luggage.
