MacBook Pro Booting Issues

Hi guys,

I have a late 2011 15" Quad Core i7 MacBook Pro that I'm trying to get operational. The issue is that when I put in a hard drive, it does not boot all the way in. I get the Apple logo and spinning wheel on the white-blue screen for about a minute, then the only thing that is left is the white-blue screen. It stays on this screen for a very long time, fans spinning. After about 10-15 mins I turned it off since it obviously wasn't going any further.

Any ideas?

Does Disk Utility "see" the new hard drive? And have you partitioned and formatted it getting it ready to install OS X?

The hard drive i'm using is one that has mavericks loaded on. It was taken from another computer, and worked just fine there. I have also tried a different hard drive in the MacBook Pro, and this also did not work.

Both drives are formatted for Mac OS and are completely functional.

Any ideas?

I was thinking you may have a bad SATA cable which runs from the drive connector to the logic board. Can you boot the machine from an external hard drive? You'll need either an adapter or SATA carrier.

This does not seem to have made a difference, after booting into it I get the logo and spinning wheel, then the screen goes blank (just white-blue). Perhaps I have to start it in recovery mode?

What happens when you boot from this or another drive that is connected externally, ie FireWire or USB?

Well I've tried to boot it from both hard drives externally and it hasn't made a difference. The machine still boots to the apple logo then stays on the bluish screen. Other thoughts?
