Macbook Pro 2014 keeps restarting over and over

Hello all,

I have a Mid 2014 Macbook Pro Retina 15" that keeps rebooting due to an error. I was running OS 10.15.7 and just upgraded it to 11.7 and it keeps persisting. It's most noticeable when I have an external drive plugged in but it does it even without anything plugged in too other than headphones and the power cord. I'm at my wits end with this one and it makes it really difficult to do work when it keeps rebooting. It even did it 5 times in a row one morning in a span of 15 minutes.

Did you have this problem before upgrading to Big Sur 11.7 ?
Your mid 2014 MBPr is right on the edge of compatibility for this OS and personally I never like Big Sur a bit "buggy" for my liking. Is it the last version of macOS 11.7 ? Are there any further updates available?

Yes it is fully upgraded to Big Sur. I just updated it from Catalina, and yes I was having the same issue in Catalina as well with no changes.

Do you get the, "This device shut down because of a problem..." notification?

I'm no expert on system reports here but I would try resetting NVRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R.
Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
When your Mac finishes starting up, you might need to adjust any system settings that were reset.

If this doesn't help it won't hurt but the next thing I'd suggest would be to boot into Safe Mode and see if the problem re occurs.

To help determine whether an issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up, you can start up your Mac in safe mode.

Today alone it has rebooted at least 5 times. It can vary wildly from being able to use it for a few hours before it reboots to rebooting while it's starting up or on the log in screen. A couple times now it has also shown the flashing folder icon with a question mark when rebooting, which makes me think it's an SSD issue.

Look at all the panic logs at the top of the file for a link similar to one below and see if you can find the same file as the one I bolded.

If so, that might indeed indicate a potential SSD issue since the NVMe is the bus used to communicate with the SSD.

OWC has replacement SSD's for your MBP, so that might be something you might want to think about.

However, ensure that you've tried to operate the Mac in Safe Mode and if it panics there, it's likely a hardware issue and not software.

I suspected that the SSD might be not seated well due to vibrations or surface pressure on the bottom cover of my MBP as I load a lot of gear with my MBP during transport for my DJ gigs.

I removed and seated my SSD twice (first time not working and I got the flashing folder on bootup) and the problems all appears to be resolved.

I removed and seated my SSD twice (first time not working and I got the flashing folder on bootup) and the problems all appears to be resolved.

I guess that's why Apple has progressively increased the number of components that are soldered and glued in place.
