MacBook Pro 2010 Kernal Panics/Very High Temperatures - HELP!

Dear Fellow Mac Users

I realise this is in the Hardware section, but seeing as it is about software and hardware, I thought it would be acceptable.

The Specs:

MacBook Pro 2010 (6.1) i7 2.66ghz with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card and 8gb of crucial RAM.

The Problem(s):

In February of this year I took the plunge and upgraded to Mavericks. All went well, until (from what i can see from my saved logs) my upgrade to 10.9.3 at the end of May. My first saved Kernel Panic log was dated 26/06/2014. The screen would just go black and restart with the message "Your computer restarted because of a problem", It didn't happen very often, about once every month or two, up until August, about a month after upgrading to 10.9.4, then the Panics started to happen more frequently. My logs state that it happened 2 weeks from the 2/8/2014 then every week from the 31/8/2014, then twice a week after that, Im now on 10.9.5.

Now I am at a point where it can happen up to 15 times a day, depending on what I am doing on the MacBook Pro.

I have a Mac Pro desktop which I use solely for Music and 3D rendering, and I used to use the MacBook Pro for everything else, including photoshop, but now I am having to pretty much use the Mac Pro for everything (something I don't really want to do), and to the point where I have the MacBook Pro on, purely to be linked up via LAN to the Mac Pro to access and copy files across.

I should also mention that I use an external display with my MacBook Pro, something which has been said to increase the Kernel Panic frequencies, but It seems to happen almost as often when I use the MacBook Pro screen or the external display.

I have tried, many, many things. Deleting the .plist containing "windows", disabling the automatic graphics card switching. I have ran the hardware test on loop overnight, which came up with nothing. The only thing I haven't tried doing is a clean install, which I will probably have to try if I can't get it fixed from any suggestions on here.

When does the problem occur?:

This is the strange part, at first it seemed completely random, but as it's now happening everyday, I have started to notice certain patterns.

Guaranteed to give Kernel Panics:
Looking at photo albums on Facebook.
Searching under 'Image' in Google Search.
Switching to list view in finder, then opening up a file branch by clicking the arrow.
Sites that are very image orientated.

It seems to not like multiple images on the screen. Its funny because the more graphically intense the program, the less chance of a kernel panic. I have used Photoshop for hours with no problem, then I will go online to look up something and BAM a kernel panic.

I did look into the Logic Board Problem, as some of the symptoms are there, but most of the problems people have had are the graphics getting mangled and not being able to turn on their computers, while mine will just suddenly restart and give the error message: "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up".

I have 34 separate Kernel Panic Logs that I have saved in textedit. There have been 100s more, but as it happens so often, I couldn't be bothered to save every single one.

My Second Issue:

Very High temperatures from my MacBook Pro.

I always used my Macbook Pro on a Kensington stand, not just because it raised the Macbook Pro up to eye level (before I switched to external display), it also allowed for better cooling of the computer. I did notice the Fan would come on quite a lot from general use, but from what I read online, using an external display will make it run hotter, and their advice was to keep it on a stand, which is what I was doing already, so I thought nothing of it.

Then when the Kernel Panics starting happening more frequently, there was mention of high temperatures causing problems with the thermal paste on the logic board. So I installed iStats Menus to monitor the temperatures, and to my amazement, just after the computer was turned on, it was already at 75-85C (167-185F for you americans ) and When I had used it for a while, just browsing online and listening to music, the temperature had shot up to almost 100C (212F), I then tried it with Photoshop and it hit 106C (223F) and stayed there, even though the fan speeds said 6000rpm, which I believe is their maximum speed!

The room wasn't particularly warm (being in Britain ) and it had good ventilation. I opened up the MacBook Pro to check for dust build up, and there was a finest of fine layer of dust inside, no hair balls like I used to get on my old PC laptops. Never the less, I gave it a blow with my air compressor to get rid of any dust. I also purchased a new laptop stand (Griffin GC16034 Elevator Desktop Stand), which not only elevates it off the ground, but also has barely any contact with the computer, so plenty of ventilation.
Made absolutely no difference to the temperatures what so ever.

This cannot be right that even with the upmost optimum conditions (aside from living in a fridge) it still puts out such high temperatures!

I installed SMC Fan Control and set the default speed to 3500rpm, and the start up temperature is now 64C (147F), and usually goes up to 85C (185F) for web browsing, but still hits 106C (223F) with the more intense programs. It usually stays around 45-55C (113-131F) when I am just listening to music with the screen off.

Its a world away from the Temperatures in my Mac Pro (granted its a desktop so will be far superior with dissipating heat), but when running the beast at full speed with some 3D rendering over night, the highest temperature it hit was 45C (113F) and normally runs between 20-30C (68-86F). I have never (touch wood) had a major problem with my Mac Pro, and its a 2008 model!

Its not right that I should be having such problems with a Mac! I switched to Mac after being tired of the constant problems I used to have with all my windows computers, (had one Acer laptop that i had to have replaced 4 times in 6 months!).


I don't really want to have to take it to Apple, as its almost a year out of its warranty. But If thats literally the last resort then I guess I will have to!

I have tried to be as detailed and thorough as possible, save you having to ask me lots of follow up questions, but please ask me if theres something I have missed out!

In my extensive experience…not true. If the hardware & software of a computer is working fine…using an external display will not increase the chance of kernel panics.

Exactly! If you suspect a software problem…this is one of the first things that should have been tried…instead of "dealing" with things as you have since June.

If you feel that the upgrade to Mavericks has something to do with the problem…then why didn't you downgrade long ago?? But I will suggest…99% chance...the Mavericks upgrade had absolutely nothing to do with things.

Regarding all of the temp info that was posted. Yes those temps are high…probably the highest I've seen…and I'm surprised that the computer is not automatically shutting off.

The VERY FIRST THING you want to do is…figure out if you have a software issue or a hardware issue. And the most straight forward way of determining this is…with a fresh OS install. With ABSOLUTELY no other apps installed. You don't need to do this with the MacBook Pro's internal drive…you can do it with an external drive.

If the computer works fine AFTER testing with a fresh OS install…then you know you have a software issue. If the problems remain…then you most likely have a hardware issue.

As to the high heat issues.... I would recommend popping off the bottom panel. Hold the fan blades captive and hit them with short quick blasts of compressed air. This should clear the exhaust paths and hopefully drive the temps down overall. If this doesn't help at all, I would personally look at the way the thermal compound was installed between the heatsink and the chips it attaches to.

Also, I would do away with SMCFanControl. The fans are thermostatically controlled by the SMC, so forcing the fans to subvert the SMC is counter-productive and will ultimately shorten the fan lifespan.

Thanks for telling me I could install the OS on an external drive. Iv been putting off a fresh install because of the hassle of having having to wipe and then restore the old backup again.

I did a clean install on a spare USB drive I had. About two minutes of google image searching and BAM a kernel panic happened. BSD process was WebKit, which Im assuming is Safari, seeing as I was using Safari when it crashed. All my previous logs either say WindowServer, kernel_task or WebKit.

This doesn't rule out the possibility of it being Mavericks, is it possible for me to use my Lion installer to install lion on an External USB drive, or is this not possible? Is it pretty much a done deal that its the Logic board thats the problem?

All in all, I think I will have to take my MacBook Pro to my local apple store and just refuse to leave till they fix it for free, seeing as the logic board problem is one they know about and it has happened to a ridiculous amount of 2010 MacBook Pros!

Many people seem to have had this problem start when they installed Mountain Lion, Mountain Lion didn't interest me at the time, and Mavericks was free so I thought "Why Not?", but I wonder had I upgraded to Mountain Lion, would this problem have happened then, which would have been in my 3 year warranty period. I guess we'll never know!

Install Lion by all means but do not think that is your problem. Have you blasted air through as yet? If all does not impprove maybe off to a Genius Bar and ask they check out the graphics.

I would follow cwa107's advice about removing the bottom panel and looking closely at the thermal paste coating he mentioned. The panics you're receiving are clearly related to the GPU either overheating or failing. If you do take the machine to Apple, my bet is they're going to want to change out the logic board at your expense. Your particular model MacBook Pro was the subject of a recall and free repair for failing nVidia GPUs, however, I believe the timeframe for getting that free repair is over.

Just so we are both 100% clear. Did you actually boot the computer from the external drive (instead of the internal HD)? Just want to be sure.

I installed Lion on the external drive as well, just to be sure. It took a whole hour of constantly looking through google images for the Mac to finally Kernel Panic, though unlike in Mavericks, the Mac just went black and froze and stayed like that until I eventually powered it off and turned it back on again. Strange. At least now I can 100% confirm its a hardware issue.

I will open up the laptop once it has cooled down.

Off to Mac I shall go! Hope I can get it fixed for free, I wanted to get a SSD upgrade for Xmas, that may have to wait!

I removed the panel and gave it a blow of air, but nothing really came out, it was pretty spotless inside, bar a very tiny amount of dust. I couldn't get to the paste, as it required a special screwdriver. But I pretty much know it needs to go to apple now.

I will fight tooth and nail to get that recall repair done for free, as I have done nothing but take care of that Macbook Pro, probably why it took almost 4 years for the problem to surface.

I will do a clean install of mavericks on the mac before I take it in. Don't want them snooping through my files and trying to blame the problem on something I've installed.

Yes…this is the conclusion we were trying to confirm (hardware or software). If it's hardware…it's probably the logic board. Too expensive to replace yourself.

If you can get Apple to replace it for free…great!!! Otherwise (unfortunately)…you may be shopping for a new computer.

You might want to nix the SMCFanControl before you go. As a technician, I would personally find that to be a an intentional subversion of technologies designed to keep your computer operating within design tolerances. And that sort of thing may actually hurt your chances of getting a good will repair.

I have been using the Macbook Pro without the external display now, and I have noticed much less Kernel Panics and the the temperature is much much lower. It now averages around 50-55C (122-131) with normal use and often goes down to 45C (113F) and I've removed SMCFanControl as per cwa107's advice, and so its running a low temperature with a fan speed of 2000rpm. Running the external display with the discreet graphics card (Nvidia) always on, really ramped up the temperature.

Hopefully going to take it to Apple on Monday and find out what can be done!

Thought I would update this thread.

Took my MacBook Pro into my local Apple shop for a Genius Bar appointment. He ran some diagnostic software on it which, of course, confirmed it was the logic board problem.

He said that Apple had an extended warranty for my model, and it expired literally at the beginning of December.

But he talked to his manager, and agreed to have the MacBook Pro repaired free of charge, which I was very happy with !

He also commented on the excellent condition of my Laptop, saying he wishes everyone took as good care of theirs as I do.

It's been with them for a week, and they emailed me today to say its ready for collection. So I will be picking it up tomorrow !
