The battery for my Macbook Pro 17 died, Serial No. W02271DLZ9DA, Model No. A1189 10.8V 68Wh. I was told at our local Apple retailer that that battery cannot be bought from them. I have found several comparable aftermarket batteries online from $20.00 on up, but have been told these could harm my computer. Can you tell me if that is correct or not and if so, what are my options? I have been using my computer with electric, but my cord has been unplugged while working and the risk of losing my work is great.

Not sure how the cord can become unplugged while you're working or do you mean something else? Anyway, you can purchase a quality battery for your MBP 17" model from Other World Computing (Mac Sales). The replacement battery from Mac Sales is $94 but it's actually a better battery than the Apple original.

Dear chscag,

The part that attaches to my computer has become disconnected when I have moved to reach for something and it hits something to knock it off. Maybe I'm the only person this happens to, but I've done it several times... I'll check into the battery at Other World Computing. Thanks for letting me know about them.
