I have a Macbook 2008 that loses battery power during sleep mode within hours. Over night a 100% charge will be at zero. When I plug back in the dialogue/warning box says a usb device is drawing too much power.......
I have done plenty of searching and found no fixes for this yet. I looked at the usb device tree and it doesn't show any problems. Anyone have a clue on how to fix this? Thanks,
Jerry

Do you have any USB devices plugged into this computer? If so…what?

And if you do have USB devices plugged into it…have you tried unplugging them before putting the computer to sleep at night to see what happens?

Nothing is plugged into usb ports. For that matter nothing is ever plugged in. The iphone is always charged at the wall. I can't remember the last time anything was plugged into the usb. FWIW this is a new Apple battery too. The last battery was losing the charge so I thought it was the battery. I was wrong.

Thanks Nick. I did the SMC reset last night and the battery had 50% charge. That was at about 10pm. I woke up around 3am and checked. It was already at zero.

What I'm suspecting is...something is running in the background that is preventing the computer from properly sleeping. What you need to do is:

- reboot the computer (don't launch any apps)
- now launch "Activity Monitor"
- There's a tab in the Activity Monitor window...you want to select "All Process's"
- There is also a "% CPU" column. Look thru this column to see if there are any apps running that are using up a lot of CPU resources.

What we need to seperate is...what this computer does under "normal" conditions...and "test" conditions. What we've been doing is test conditions (which is different than when putting this computer to sleep normally under "normal" conditions).

I would try sleeping this computer tonight after a fresh reboot & no apps launched.

As far as the console messages. Do you have a wireless printer in your network?...and do you typically use bluetooth devices with ths computer?

Ok. The battery is at 50%. I can close all applications, reboot, and put it in sleep mode. I'm betting in an hour the battery will be down to 20% or so. We use to have a Lexmark wireless printer (that didn't work all too well) and now have an HP wireless. I have deleted all the printers, emptied the trash, and the log still shows these Lexmark messages.

Great! If we can see that much of a battery charge drop in just one hour of sleeping...that will tell us something. In just one hour of sleeping...a computer should even lose 1% (or 1% at most).

By the way...when you put this computer to "sleep"...is it actually sleeping? Is the sleep light "pulsing" as it should...or does it stay on steady?

Looks to me like even though the lexmark was uninstalled there are still processes running in the background. I am wondering if you need to do a search to find and get rid of anything Lexmark.

The light is pulsing as it should. That stupid pulsing light can keep me up at night sometimes if I don't cover it somehow. :)
Hi Lisa. I did a search and I cannot find anything else that says Lexmark.:\

If you used Stoplight (aka: spotlight) to do the searching, there's a good chance it didn't find anything as you say, so try using Find Any File instead, it will find anything. ;)

Well I found the plist that was running the Lexmark messages and got that stopped. It didn't have anything to do with battery power though. I can close the lid, open it 10 min later and it's down 5%.

I'm still thinking there's some sort of program operating in the background…and this should be listed in the "All Process's" list from Activity Monitor.

I still get the "USB device drawing too much power....." dialogue when I shut down and restart. I think it's connected to the battery draw. I could be wrong. :)

Just had another thought. The problem is with your 2008 MacBook...correct? If so...I think that we need to know how many charge cycles are on the battery. To get this value...go to:

- Apple Menu
- About this Mac
- More Info
- System Report

In this window click on "Power" in the left column. Then look thru the info on the right. There should be a "Cycle Count" value there. Let us know what that is.
