Check out the Apple Support page for your problem

Battery not recognized or "X" icon appears on menu bar

If you haven't installed Battery Update 1.2, it's possible that may fix your problem. Worst case scenario: you have to get your battery replaced. Thankfully, Apple is being very lenient about batteries. All you have to do is call them up, explain your situation, and you'll have your replacement either the next day or the day after. Apple's support in this matter is impeccable :D
