If nothing is pressed soon, pressing the power button leads to a grey screen with a prohibition sign on a Macbook Air 13'' running Mountain Lion.

Attempt 1: Pressed Command+Option+R

Internet recovery on compatible network -> leads to this error:

apple.com/support
-3400F

Attempt 2: Pressed D

Internet recovery on compatible network -> leads to this error:

apple.com/support
-3400D

Attempt 3: Pressed Command+R

Prohibition sign.

Resolution input would be greatly appreciated.

Please read the link in my sig and post again. From what little you've said, you've lost the hard drive.

The prohibition sign means that the computer can't locate a startup disc. Try powering on while holding down the Alt key and see if the MacintoshHD disc shows. If it does, try selecting it and see if the Mac boots.
