The Apple SSD is on the SATA/SATA Express controller which operates at a much slower speed (x2 link width) and the NVMe drive is on the NVMExpress controller which operates at x4 link width.

That’s why you have the speed difference. After spending a few weeks with my NVMe drive and my Apple SSD drive currently installed... you really notice the difference in drive performance...
