Are there any benefits of partitioning Mac OS Extended (Journaled) over Mac OS Extended on an backup external disk?

The last time I checked which wasn't very long ago, nearly all sites said YES!!! Lots of benefits, and lots of even high tech reasons for normal backups on external drives.

One answer I couldn't find was whether the same reasons actually applied to Time Machine backups as it uses some non-normal methods and directory structure.

Anyway, there's virtually no wasted or much drive space used, so no real reason to not have the backup volume with journaled enabled it seems.

Edit: And PS: I don't think one even has a choice to partition/format a drive volume for straight Mac use without it being "(Journaled)" with the recent Disk Utility in recent OS X versions.

Harry is correct. A journaled file system is easier to recover from errors than one that is not, which is why we do not recommend non journaled file systems such as FAT-32.

Journalling should reduce the number of directory repairs that need to be made to the hard drive. There are other file systems that support journaling (OS X is one of them). My suggestion choose journaling whenever possible.

Here's Apple's take on journaling.
