How can apple sell a computer without a keyboard and mouse, won't this be confusing for people used to seeing a pc bundled with everything including the kitchen sink? :dummy:

I think that it is meant for people who already have a computer and want to upgrade, on the site it says "use your favorite keyboard and mouse". Which is a true statement since I know every time I have a bought a system I never use the one that comes with the system; instead I already have a set that I enjoy using. I have a few sets of keyboard/mice that sit on a shelf since I like my Apple wireless keyboard and MS Optical 2 button Trackball.
I wonder if this include Windows keyboards as well since I believe the mini is being targeted to the windows people that have been using their iPods and iTunes?

Windows keyboards will work fine on the mini. Just keep in mind that the mini uses a USB keyboard and USB mouse.

Ok. But don't most people if they are upgrading either sell their system complete to raise funds, or use the old computer as a 2nd system, for the kids maybe?
Also, i was thinking about the mini only having 2 usb ports. If 1 is for the keyboard, and 1 is for the printer, where does the ipod shuffle go? And the isight? And the camcorder. And the digi-cam? Charging via hubs doesn't usually work, it needs more usb's.
And another thing, if i buy a mac i want a matching monitor, but £700UK for a 20" is way too much, and it doesn't match!

PowerBooks and iBooks only have 2 USB ports on them as well. If you are using apple's usb keyboard that gives you 2 more ports on it to use as well. the iSight is a firewire camera. They are assuming you will be using a keyboard that has built in USB ports (basically they want you to buy their keyboard).

Most mac users surprisingly don't use mac monitors due to their price which is why iMacs and eMacs sell very well

A self-powered USB hub will work just fine for charging/using a camcorder, printer, digi-cam etc. The iSight uses the firewire port, not usb.

If you want a monitor and keyboard & mouse with the computer you can either add them as options when checking out or go for the eMac.

I think this is a great idea, how many PC people that have complained about the price of Macs being the only reason they don't switch? This way they can buy the Mac mini and still keep there current PC setup since most PC users that are going to switch don't throw away or sell their full PC setup before trying a Mac first-hand for a while.

You can get a KVM switch and use your current PC keyboard/mouse with this new system and also use your existing monitor with the same KVM switch so I don't think that's as big a deal as your making it out to be.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't stop them from complaining that it's not cold....

This will be the core of my Carputer. Running to a Xenarc Touchscreen with the appropriate drivers and using a bluetooth keyboard and armrest mounted trackball (for on the go, no look stuff. Programming certain buttons to do things and the scroll wheel for things like volume and the like.) Ah, Nirvana. I bet I could swing this for around a grand ^_^;

The Mac mini is meant to be "confusing people used to seeing a pc bundled with everything including the kitchen sink". It's not aimed at them, all of the other Mac lines are aimed at these people.

People can order a a keyboard and mouse if they want to...it's a standard option when you order a Mac Mini. Why not have it optional? What did strike me as odd was that a monitor is not a standard option when ordering a Mini. I guess thgey figure their monitors are too expensive for a $500 computer. They're probably right.

Doesn't anyone remember the old days when every Mac was a la carte?

Well....this is my first post here in the Mac-Forums. I was drawn here by the announcement of the Mac Mini. As you can see by my siggy, I'm a hardcore PC fan. Mainly for gaming. Although I plan on staying primarily a PC user, I will be purchasing my first Mac now that one is finally offered at an affordable price. The Mac Mini does make a great second PC if you already do own one.

I have never used a Mac before. Does OS X come with an email client and web browser built in? This system will mainly be for everday activities like email, web browsing, instant messanging. Since most of you are seasoned Mac professionals, what other types of software are available for everyday activities? I know with a PC you have multiple options for web browsers and email clients. Is it the same in the Mac world?

Audio

I've noticed that this mac doesn't have an audio-in port. Since there is an audio out port it obviously has a sound card built in, is there anyway to record audio with this system? A usb mic perhaps?

Thanks

yeah Macs come with Apple Mail, iCal for calendaring, Address Book for your contacts, Safari for surfing the web. You can download Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, Camino, Omniweb, etc etc for web browsers if you want. Let's see what other types of software would you like? :)

You can buy an USB audio interface, for example the Griffin iMac, to provide Audio In ports.
Consumer level Macs (except the iMac G5) don't have an Audio In port
