Mac Mini won't boot into recovery mode?

So I'm trying to format/reinstall OS X on my mac mini (2012) and it has OS X 10.9 on it (although last time it said to 10.9.5). The computer boots up fine, but when I start it up and hold the option key (i think? i have a windows keyboard so its control key) and choose recovery 10.9.1, and it shows the logo and that its loading but its never gone beyond that I've waiting long enough to know its not just slow. For anyone that helps, thanks.

Try the two-key combo...command + r...when you reboot the computer.

To access recovery after chime immediately hold down Command R to access Recovery and then run Repair Disk from there to see the state of the hard drive. Option on a Windows kb is ALt is it not? Control appears on both type of boards.

Sorry thats the key I meant.... the actual problem is that I cant actually get to repair the disk cause recovery wont boot up

Yes...we understand that. Try the command + r combo when booting (or the appropriate key on a Windows keyboard).

Please boot into the Recovery Partition first. Your question should be answered.

This is what the Recovery Partition Menu should look like (or something very similar):

See the option to "Reinstall Mac OS X"?? That's why you should boot into the Recovery Partition first...and not worry about the Internet Recovery at this point.

And from Nick's very kind post, select Disk utility to do that Erase and then reinstall.
