If I connect an Ethernet cable to my Mac Mini, its status shows "connected" but I cannot connect to the Internet. If I disconnect the Ethernet cable and turn WiFi on, I can connect to the Internet. However, if I then connect the Ethernet cable, I no longer have an Internet connection through WiFi.

So that means your issue is in the ethernet connection which is what we need to check out.

* I am going to assume you have have a home network and your network router set to handle DNS and hand out IP addresses and that you are not assigning IP addresses in your router using MAC (Media Access Control) addresses. If this is correct then try the following:

Go to System Preferences -> Network -> click on the Ethernet connection.
Make sure at the top that Location is set to Automatic.
Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using DHCP"
If that is all good click on the Advanced button found in that box on the lower right.

In the advanced box - under TCD/IP you should see:

Configuring IPv4 should show "Using DHCP"
Configuring IPv6 should show "Automatic"

DHCP Client ID - should be blank

Under DNS you should not see any IP addresses ( this is not true if you are running your own servers but for a home router nothing will be there because the router handles this.)

The other tabs should be fine but if none of the above works we will explore that later.

Thanks Lisa, but I had already tried those things. I am taking the Mac to the IT department at a nearby university. One of the Mac experts there has offered to check it out.

Try doing a PRAM reset first. The Mini may be "remembering" an older connection and is confused. Resetting the PRAM.
