I am aware of the "plus icon" in the mail header bar. however, this is not as convenient for me as the previous method. "New and/or Improved" is not necessarily better for everyone.
I don't see this change as an improvement. thanks to all who looked.

prior to Yosemite, Mail app had icon in top bar of the Mail app page, clicking it opened a panel of email addresses, icon now gone.
how do i restore that icon?
MBP (early 2011)
Yosemite 10.10.1
Mail 8.1
Going back to your original post, you indicated that you had to click the icon to get it to open panel of email addresses. The "+" button works exactly the same, click and a panel of email addresses opens. Maybe it's me, but I'm not sure how the two are that different. One click, get a list..as opposed to one click, get a list.

Getting all lathered up over it just seems silly. It's a change, go with it! ;)

mail icon missing

fortunately i'm not lathered up about anything. the two are not the same which you could see if you tried hem both. the original i used kept open the list of mail addresses, whereas the "plus icon" closes once you select each mail recipient. then you go back to the icon to select the next recipient. thanks for posting.

Ah, a new problem. You hadn't divulged that you wanted multiple addressees. There are two ways, the one you described, one at a time, or another way, create a distribution list. I have several such lists in contacts, when I want or need to send a group an email, I can just select the group and then all the addresses for everybody in that group are added to the email at once. Create the distribution list in Contacts as a Group, it will show up in Mail.

Anything else that you haven't told us?

I haven't installed the latest OS X to try, but does not just start typing an address still work for a Mail address and let it auto-complete or select if needed??

It would seem to me that just typing the first few letters of a contact would be faster and easier than selecting them all from any list.

Well, the same as I was stating in my post above - after typing in the first or second letters of a contact, a list appears - works fine in Yosemite Mail - Dave :)

Is there no auto-completion of an address with OS Yosemite Sam's Mail app, or only a list provided??

It seems like the OS forgot something so simple if only the latter list is provided. :[

Well, works fine for me (no need for groups & limited number of relatives and friends) - the screen capture below shows a 'new' message and I simply typed in 's' into the To: line - my wife was the first hit and a bunch of others - hitting return would simply fill in my spouse's email address on Yahoo - using the up & down keys can move me to the others that showed up (sorry but blocked out the personal info) - Dave :)

Thanks Dave,

That seems to be just a slightly different auto-completetion view that Mavericks and SL Mail.app uses. ;)
