There goes that stereotyping thing again...
Hello!
I'm new to Mac Forums, but I had to join after reading this thread since I've had a similar experience with "Mac Haters."
My younger brother has two friends who are PC experts. I know from talking to them that these guys know very little about the Mac. Yet whenever we all get together, both these guys...one of them in particular...can never keep from spewing a little bit of venom my way.
Recently, it's been over the iPod and the iPhone. "Mike" will say something like "yeah...I've got no use for that iPod. I can get an MP3 player that'll do the exact same thing for $100 bucks!!" When I said that no, actually, he couldn't. He looked at me like I was an idiot, and emphatically said, "Uh...YEAH, I could." Then I said, "Well I love my iPod!" and he said, "That's because you drink the Apple Kool-Aid!!" At which point my brother and his friends all gaffaw and talk about what cultists Apple users are.
Yesterday was the same. I was wearing my "I love iPod" t-shirt, and they started in on the iPod, then they switched to the iPhone and what suckers people are that spend $500 on a phone. I showed them my Treo 650, told them that I paid about that much for my Treo, and have never regretted my decision. One of the guys says: "I can get that phone for FREE if I wanted!!" When I told him that no, he couldn't, this guy says, "Well, why would I want a $500 phone when I can get one just as good for FREE?" When I said a free phone wouldn't be just as good, they basically laughed and started talking about "kool-aid drinkers" again.
Just curious....how do you all handle such blatant Apple hatred?

I use reverse psychology on them. I start with Macs reek, Macs don't run any programs, Macs do nothing but look pretty. OSX crashes and locks every 20 seconds. The MAC is full of virus's and Spyware. The iPod does not play music. Just for looks. It really bugs my Mac hating friends which is pretty much every close friend I have. They back off after all that.
At the same time I have my ibook doing all the things they say it will not do. Works with the crowd I hang with. Those exact same people call me to fix their Windows machines. The other night one had 400+ Malware/Spyware and many virus's. Funny they call me, their hated Mac Friend when they get in trouble with their Windows. Funny thing is my Windows systems never have most of those issues because I know how to prevent them. And they say us Mac/OSX people are dumb.
Ha ha sounds like your brother's friends are a bunch of idiots. Kool-aid? Come on. If they honestly think a crummy free camera phone from Verizon or whatever is as good as the iPhone, they don't even deserve to be acknowledged in this sort of conversation. They clearly know little about Macs, and don't really deserve any of your time or effort defending Mac. Seems like they see hating Mac as like the ''in'' thing, like 'oh my friends all hate mac, I should too even though I have no understanding whatsoever of computers"
It's kind of like throwing pearls before swine dude. Just ignore them. They are already dead on the inside. lol
Yeah...I actually told my brother later that I believe I've used Windows way more than his friends have used a Mac (at a previous job I used nothing but Windows for about 3 years), so I think I'm more able to make an informed decision on what operating system is right for me. He just said, "well, you know how my friends are..."
I agree, it's not really worth my time, but it still kind of pisses me off, knowing that they really don't know what they're talking about, but are still making me feel like I'M the idiot.

Er....yes, yes you did.
stereotype = a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group
i grew up on DOS, in my poor school, then went right to windows '95 to '98, 2000, then xp. i have used windows and DOS my whole life until earlier this year when i finally got my macbook. i always envied people who had macs, and after playing with someones powermac with OS 9 on it, was in love with them. so in my opinion, macs are just better systems, they are easier to use, and funner. i never plan to go back to using a pc, and hope i never have to. but if anyone wants to say mac's suck, then they should at least try one before saying anything.
Heh, I'm actually going to try putting a DOS emulator on my Mac tonight so I can try out some ooooooold games I have lying around.
The main problem with windows haters is that they have never used OS X, or at least not to the extent that a Mac owner has. After using OS X, you realize just how much better it is than Windows (I know I did!).
What is also equally as annoying though, are Mac elitists that try to bash anything Windows related, especially the recent switchers who act like they've been Mac users all along or dont think of it as anything more than a fashion statement.
However, I have never been a PC hater. PCs are not like what the "Get a Mac" commercials make it look like. Vista been a HUGE improvement over XP (Despite the higher memory requirements), although Leopard is going to blow it out of the water when it comes out.
Just hope the floppies still work.
I can understand what is being said by hobs707. I work in the tutoring center's front desk at my school and I hear the same types of verbal low blows from PC users all the time. My co-work has a black macbook and when I first saw it I said "wow thats a crazy color?!" I didn't know much about the hardware setups and the potential of the Macs. After talking to him though I became a true believer. People who visit the center always make fun of him by saying how Macs are "boring". I am always in the middle of the argument playing moderator (don't ask me how this happens i don't know?!??) but having seen the capability of the Mac vs. the PC I will always side with the Mac. In my own house hold my father and sister used Dells and I had a custom gaming PC I built. All of those PCs where let downs for what I wanted to do. Fortunately though my dad's and sister's PCs have been replaced by a iMac 24" and the iMac 20". Well anyway from what I have seen the two main reasons for hating macs or 1. Jealous or 2. A lack of knowledge. It is so funny seeing people argue over why the PC is better than a Mac and 5 minutes later say "its good but my PC can some of that stuff too!!!" In the end though I plan to ignore all the jealousy and enjoy a Macbook pro and be a rebel.;D
