But a band related dilemma. :p
I think he (our director) put me in symphonic for next year, which is the band who does to band camp, marching competitions, and worst of all...plays at ALL THE FOOTBALL GAMES.
Sure it's encouraged, but I don't want to do that.
I socialize at games.
Catch up with all the people I might not have classes with.
They're great, but now......ugh.

I did that this year. Believe me, it's a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. Band camp is fun because you get to see all your friends a month before school starts (Of course going from 8 AM - 3 PM five days a week isn't exactly my idea of summer vacation) Football games are also fun, you just have to make time to socialize after the game. Competition can be a drag since it's usually on Saturday, but in the end its worth it.

The only part I didn't like was after school practice. 2 hours a day, (4-6, in addition to regular band class earlier in the day) 4 days a week, for three months. THAT was painful.

Enjoy it, and trust me, it'll be an experience.

The fondest memories I have of high school were in band, even though the director labeled me an invalid and always accused me of stealing equipment.

Still, looking back, band was one of two things about high school (other than running the TV station) that I enjoyed.

In other news, I got an aquarium and another fish today.

So I now have Malcom X and Charles Foster Kane living in the same tank.

I can't wait for the wacky, nutty misadventures that will befall the late newspaper tycoon and the militant black islamic revolutionary!

I just got offered a job for $12 an hour, 40+ hours a week this summer, but it's an hour and a half out of my way.

I'm torn here, because the pay is amazing, but that's a long drive every day for work.

Ugh, dilemma.

I would take it. If you don't spend it, you'd totally have more than enough $$ for a very nice MBP at the end of the summer.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of gas at $3.75/gallon.

I know. This was my train of thought. I'm seriously considering it, but I'm also considering that gas is expensive, (as cwa said), which creates a problem there. I've got friends that are right out there that would most likely be willing to let me crash, which would help, plus, I could always sleep in my car at the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Do you have another job lined up this summer? Do you realize a lot of people are looking their jobs so one that pays $12 isn't bad? I barely make more than that....
I used to drive 30 mins to work. I'd fill my 10 gal tank up every 2 weeks. $100 in gas a month isn't much if it's your only expense when making $1400+ a month after taxes.

Yeah, I've got another one lined up, but it's minimum wage for 20 hours a week, and I can literally ride my bike there in five minutes.

And I've got gas, insurance, and a phone bill to pay, so, this job may not be a bad idea, especially if I can find a place to crash out there.

You make a half hour drive to work seem like it's worse than death.
It's not easy finding a job out of college that's close to work. I would say a half hour commute is average. It's certainly below average in Chicago.

You guys don't know how cheap your fuel is.

"gas" is AT LEAST $8.75 per US gallon over here.

It was the price of fuel and clothes etc that amazed us most on holiday this year in FL. Incredibly cheap!

I suppose it relates to wages and cost of living etc.

$12 is just above our minimum wage. But only just.

Minimum wage is like $6 or something here so your gas is a little more expensive but not by much.

You have to understand that up until around the time Hurricane Katrina struck, gas was around $2.25/gallon. It then shot up over $3.00/gallon and really hasn't come back down for significant stretches on the average.

To add insult to injury, many Americans (and no, I'm not condoning it) drive cars that dwarf what the average European drives. So, although the knee-jerk reaction from most Europeans would be "just buy smaller cars", it's not all that simple. You can't just dump a 15MPG SUV that you owe $25,000 on when it's massively depreciated due to the current fuel prices.

So, it may seem silly that we're complaining about fuel prices that are half what you're accustomed to paying, but there's good reasons for it.

What's the "good reason" for owning a SUV that gets the same gas milage a 70's muscle car gets? :)

I agree. And our fuel prices have gone up around 60c per litre in the last 3 months. so thats about $2.40 ish... in 3 months... for no other reason than 80% of our fuel cost is tax and the barrel price has increased. Due to that fact that we have such high tax on the fuel, a $1 increase in barrel price adds $5 total to us.

Fortunatly, most of our vehicles are reasonably fuel efficient compared to American stuff. But it still hurts. When it costs me more to fill up my car that I normally spend on 2 pairs of shoes!!!

Gotta say. Loving the macbook keyboard..

I don't recall having said there's a "good reason for owning an SUV". I was just explaining why Americans get worked up over what seems like low fuel prices.

So did you take the job offering $12 an hour?
