ok, I'll try that

but I haven't heard of anyone else having to do that to play it in VLC
is there something I can change, so that it will convert right, so I don't need a 4th program to back up my dvds.

did you try mplayer? sa far as no audio in vlc, it may be a prob with the file, but you wont know until you play it in qt after converting to a .mov.

...

I just tried divX doctor, it didn't work and said I needed some codec I couldn't get.

yeah...I have maybe 10avi or other movie files
only maybe one of them works in VLC

when I DO, it messes up all the sound on my computer, i have to restart just to play a song in iTunes...

so I don't know if its VLC or the way I'm ripping them
getting a little frustated, considering I have a new computer and expect it all to work flawlessly, ha

macman, you are my only hope

Good suggestion, I would try it in mplayer before converting it again. Sometimes mplayer will play what VLC will not, and vice versa.

EDIT: What codec are you using to encode the sound with?

Reading through the change log for VLC there are a number of comments about known problems with sound on PowerMac G5s. I am not sure if it has been fixed yet, but the problems seem to match yours. (A search for VLC G5 sound on google brought up quite a few hits as well.)

So perhaps till at least 8.2 you might want to stick with MPlayer.
