mac air mouse pad problem

sometimes I have to touch my mouse pad several times before the display lights up-
any suggestions on what would cause this?

Hello and welcome to the forum! :) Please provide information on your Macbook Air, i.e. model/year and OS X installed; also, I'm assuming by 'mouse pad' you are referring to the 'track pad' - finally, is this a 'new' problem and have you made any changes in 'System Preferences' to the trackpad's options (see attachment from my MBPro) - Dave

I have a 2011 mac air with the latest Yosemite 10.10.5 OS X installed. The problem with my track pad has been going on for several months. Otherwise it works fine. I haven't made any changes to the sys preferences.
