Very interesting, I found this the most informativeI was curious about the support statement so I did a Google search I've been working that you might be interested in and possibly read some of the hits to make sure you are getting what you are expecting and everything is compatible:

Ordered a USB C Docking station for my new 24" iMac. You can put memory 'sticks' in the docking station. It states it can support M.2 NVMe & SATA SSD 2242/2260/2280. Just trying to find out what the best option would be as far as performance and reliability. If there is a brand you recommend that would be icing on the cake.

I know there are Crucial, Western Digital, Samsung, etc. I appreciate your response.I don't quite understand what you are asking for. Are you asking for an M.2 SSD stick to fit into a USB hub that has an attachment for an SSD? Or are you asking for an M.2 SSD stick to fit into an external case kit?Or are you just asking for a recommendation for an external SSD?
I can help with any or the above, I just don't know which you are asking about.
Ordered a USB C Docking station for my new 24" iMac....
Thank you. Was looking for most reliable brand. Samsung mentioned several times. Again, I appreciate your response. You didn't say how big you need it to be, or what type of key your dock takes. See if this meets your needs...
This one is generally considered the best bang for the buck:
SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Hard Drive, V-NAND Technology, Storage and Memory Expansion for Gaming, Graphics w/Heat Control, Max Speed, MZ-V7S1T0B/AM
$115

Samsung makes faster NVMe's for not too much more money, but since your dock almost certainly only supports 10Gbps, there is no reason to pay more.
SSD Kingston 1 TBLooking for reliable M.2 1TB SSD for a USB hub with my new 24" iMac. Recommendations.TYIA
