lost timeline in FCE

Simple question- but seems insurmountable to rookie old me: where has my timeline and canvas gone in final cut express? Admittedly I did close them (little red button top left corner) but now I can't retrieve them. I have tried double clicking something in the browser with no success. I have also looked under the "windows" section of FCE- where i can see timeline and canvas written in that pale writing that means you can't click on them... Help!
