I have this Apple Training Series book I got for 31 cents (plus S & H)

appletrainingseriesOSXtiger.jpg

and this Tiger DVD

OSXtigerinstalldisc.jpg

and since an imac G3 would likely install/run Tiger, I'm now looking for a place where I can buy a used imac G3 locally near my area - I live in the West Mifflin/Munhall/Dravosburg/Homeville area, since my family says the shipping/handling to buy an imac G3 thru ebay would cost too much, and then only if I can get the computer for like 20 bucks or so.

I'm looking for such a computer so I can do the hands-on lessons from this Apple Training Series book as I've mentioned in another thread, this site that I want to be a tech that services Apples/macintoshes as well as Windows PC's, and trying to install Tiger in PearPC does not work, let alone running it in Pear PC.

So if you guys can find me places where I can buy a used imac G3 in my area (aside from the Salvation Army/Thrift Store) Please post.

School lets out in about 3 weeks, plus I'll have over a whole month before the next semester starts so I'll be ready to look for/buy the computer on around Dec. 12.

Thanks in advance.

I dropped a whole bunch of stuff off at an electronics recycling pick up point yesterday and there were iMacs of every generation stacked up like firewood.

And even better would be a G4 iMac for running Tiger. Keep an eye on those recycling points and inquire from your local Apple dealer if there is one nearby. Explain you are a student and want to tinker with a Mac.

Took your advice, Harry, and found this recycling center in our area Second Life Computers in West Mifflin - Oops - just found on the link that this business is closed (moan) , so ATM I'll try to get a macbook G4 for doing the Tiger lessons, but that doesn't mean I've abandoned getting an imac 3G - I'll save that for later, can't I?

So now that I've 2 macs to see about getting, the MB G4 (or ibook G4) - what's the difference between these 2?

and the other mac, the imac G3 - but what OS does a G3 normally run/come with - Jaguar/Cheetah?

At this point I'll take which ever computer (macbook/ibook G4 or imac G3) that I can get first.

As I understand it, the local Best Buy store's Geek Squad does electronic recycling (dropped off some broken computer hardware there Memorial Day weekend 2011)

But what exactly is it you want to do? Training on Tiger? That's obsolete.

All MacBook series are Intel machines and the earliest ones will run up to Snow Leopard OS X.6. PowerBook G4's are earlier PowerPC models which will run up to Leopard OS X.5 if the processor is over and above 867MHz, and Tiger if under that.

Mc Dude, I left you another PM. To repeat - Mom told me to check my local Craig's List first wk of December. $20 for a used imac G3 is a good price for both Mom & I. Mom likes this price and thinks I shouldn't pay over approx. $20 or around that. I agree with Mom.

Again, what OS does an imac G3 normally run?

I know Tiger is obsolete, but aren't their retro mac gamers just as there are retro PC users/gamers?

By coincidence (or likely more than just a coincidence - a Xmas gift from the Lord, is how I could see it) since this bag with the Christmas wreath is the bag that this stuff that came with this computer came in

McDude, I have a question: What do you mean by the quote that I outlined in bold that that your imac is in use for - are you saying that is the reason someone may want an old computer for (such as a customer) in the future like when I've finished training on several of these old computers (like these old PC's that I have - HP Pavilion 4530 and a Compaq Presario 5012US after I'm finished training on these) and am ready to let go of them - that this (outlined in bold in your quote) can be a good use for an old computer that's obsolete - just b/c I don't believe in throwing away/scrapping a computer that still works?

AFAIK, these old computers that I have (the HP, the Compaq, the imac) all date back to 1999-ish, and they're the oldest machines that I now have in my office.

Also my family told me not to bring any more computers home until I'm done (and have gotten rid of some of these computers which will be sometime in future) with the 2 Dell Dimension towers, the PC (tower) built from scratch my my nephew, the PC that's all in pieces, as well as these 3 computers just mentioned above - that's in total 7 computers.

And to all - thanks for all the input.

Yeah, that's usually all that these computers are used for. Tinkering with and for small tasks here and there. I don't personally sell old PC's, but they are probably much harder to sell than an old mac from 1999. People like to buy the old Macs because they're cute and unique, but a PC from 1999 is more likely just a biege box that nobody would really want (or pay for at least)

My personal recommendation for the older PC's one you're done with them is to donate them to a local place. Maybe goodwill or your local library could use them. :)
